SUMMARY
A lunch/recess aide is responsible for monitoring student behavior during meal service. Assists with
the cleanliness of the cafeteria and assists with the flow of meal service. The work is performed under the
general supervision of the principal with consultation from the Food Services Department.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
- Manages students during meal service (behavior problems will be referred to the teacher or principal according to guidelines established by the individual school site).
- Communicates with students and school staff in a positive and professional manner utilizing appropriate interpersonal skills
- Circulate throughout the cafeteria or in areas where meals are served and/or eaten assisting students who need assistance and assists with the cleanliness of the cafeteria
- Dismisses classes in an orderly manner at the scheduled time and encourage good table manners
- Aides must be knowledgeable about student behavior and characteristics and have a repertoire of acceptable methods to redirect and control students
- They must have good communication skills in order to effectively communicate with students, teachers and principals
- Enforce established rules and regulations
- Communicate discipline problems requiring attention to the appropriate teacher and/or principal
- Has the ability to exercise disciplinary procedures in a consistent and fair manner
- Function as an appropriate role model for children, providing proper examples, emotional support, and a friendly attitude and general guidance
- Respond to emergency situations for the purpose of resolving student safety concerns and reporting those concerns to direct supervisor
QUALIFICATIONS
- The aide is required to be skilled in communicating with a wide range of ages and personalities, and be able to resolve conflicts fairly to the satisfaction of all participants.
- Good reading comprehension skills are required to understand school and lunchroom rules.
- Oral communication abilities are needed to clearly explain rules and regulations.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by
an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this position. While performing the duties
of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or listen. The employee frequently is required to
stand, walk, sit, and use hands. The employee must frequently lift or move up to 50 pounds. The
employee will be exposed to the natural elements of the outdoor recess environment with a variety of
temperatures and weather conditions.
