LGC PT also offers an ISO / IEC 17043 accredited proficiency testing program for clinical laboratories outside of the United States who prefer a different schedule and sample format than U.S. laboratories.โ€ฏ

Together, API and LGC PT support the American Proficiency Institute proficiency testing program, which is known for its innovation and exceptional service.โ€ฏ

API administers all technical and regulatory aspects of the PT program; its team of Medical Laboratory Scientists are experts in proficiency testing with 174 years of combined experience in PT. The team is responsible for program planning, sample procurement, statistical review of participant data,โ€ฏperformance evaluation, and technical support.โ€ฏ

API is backed by LGC PT's customer service team, who are renowned for their personal and responsive service. In addition, the LGC PT Supply Chain assembles and ships >145,000 PT kits to API participants each year, with processes designed to help ensure the accuracy of the PT kits.โ€ฏ

Job Description

The Senior Software Engineer is a highly experienced technical professional responsible for design, modernization, and ongoing support of critical software systems that underpin the operations of API. As an essential member of the Software Development Team, they play a critical part in shaping the organization's technical direction, influencing architectural decisions, and ensuring the delivery of high-quality, secure, and maintainable software. The Senior Software Engineer serves as a subject matter expert, champions engineering best practices, and contributes to the long-term technology roadmap in support of business objectives.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

Technical Leadership and Strategy

  • Lead the design, development, modernization, and maintenance of enterprise software applications supporting API and LGC Proficiency Testing operations.
  • Influence and guide architectural decisions to ensure scalability, reliability, performance, and security.
  • Advise leadership and stakeholders on strategic technology choices, emerging technologies, and technical investments.
  • Contribute to the development and execution of the organization's technology roadmap.
  • Serve as a trusted technical advisor for complex initiatives and critical business projects.

Software Design & Development

  • Design, develop, test, and deploy high-quality software solutions using modern development practices.
  • Collaborate with product managers and stakeholders to translate business requirements into robust technical solutions.
  • Write clean, efficient, and maintainable code following best practices and coding standards.
  • Own the full software development lifecycle (SDLC), including design, development, testing, deployment, and maintenance.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex technical issues across multiple systems and environments.

Engineering Excellence

  • Help to drive adoption of modern development practices (Agile, CI/CD, DevOps).
  • Lead initiatives to strengthen automated testing, including unit, integration, and UI testing frameworks.
  • Conduct design reviews and code reviews to ensure technical excellence and knowledge sharing.
  • Promote documentation standards and maintain technical knowledge repositories.

Mentorship and Team Development

  • Provide technical guidance, coaching, and mentorship to junior and mid-level developers.
  • Promote best practices in coding standards, testing, documentation, and DevOps.
  • Support a culture of continuous learning, accountability, and collaboration within the development team.
Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field.
  • 8+ years of professional software development experience (or equivalent expertise).
  • Expertise in one or more programming languages such as Java, C#, Python, or JavaScript.
  • Strong knowledge of software architecture, design patterns, and system design.
  • Experience with databases, APIs, cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP), and microservices architecture.
  • Deep understanding of software development lifecycle (SDLC) and modern engineering practices.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills with the ability to handle ambiguity.
  • Experience leading or mentoring development teams

Preferred Qualifications

  • Masterโ€™s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field.
  • Experience leading technical teams or acting as a technical lead.
  • Expertise in cloud-native development and containerization (Docker, Kubernetes).
  • Experience with automated testing, CI/CD pipelines, and DevOps tooling.
