About this Position

Financial Planning Coaches provide individualized financial strategies and referral recommendations for students at risk for attrition due to financial reasons. These specialists understand student financial struggles, the campus resources for addressing them, and the collaborative efforts required to work as a campus wide team to help students succeed. They understand the student need/financial burden and leverage financial resources and opportunities in Enrollment Management and across campus.

Financial Planning Coaches work directly with other Scholarships and Financial Aid staff to address immediate monetary needs of students via intervention activities, education, and financial counseling. Counsel students and families regarding missed opportunities for financial aid, loans, scholarships, work-study, part-time jobs, etc. Must use professional judgment in determining student circumstances that warrant intervention and assistance. Support OSU's recruitment and retention mission through presentation of information and student communications. Seek out students at risk for attrition by electronic, text, written, verbal, and in person means and follow up with all contacts to encourage students to engage in successful college behaviors. Facilitate student outreach with current/new strategies through FPC and campus offices, academic colleges, and campus student support offices.

Required Qualifications

Financial Planning Coach I: 

  • Bachelor's Degree (degree must be conferred on or before agreed upon start date)
  • Zero - two years' experience in comparable position
  • Customer service experience preferred

Additional post-secondary education beyond requirements may substitute for years of required experience.

Skills, Proficiencies, and/or Knowledge:

Proficient in Microsoft Office and database applications. Skilled with Microsoft Excel and using data. Strong interpersonal, communication, and problem-solving skills. Knowledge of financial aid structure at campus, state, and federal levels. A passion for customer service and assisting students.

Experience serving/working with students/families with financial issues. Ability to work in a dynamic and measured environment that focuses on student success and retention. Requires an excellent customer service attitude and ability to participate in a team setting. Maintain confidentiality and sensitivity in handling student information.

A passion for student success, an ability to form creative solutions, and a positive attitude is strongly desired.

Completion of OSU Ambassador Program or comparable program required within first year after hire (pending availability of scheduled classroom coursework).

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's
  • Three or more years of experience in student development, advising, coaching, financial aid and/or related areas.
  • Experience in OSU's student management and financial database systems, and federal databases. Experience serving/working with students/families with college transition issues.
  • Experience in student retention theories and initiative. Knowledge of financial aid structure at campus, state, and federal levels.
  • Ability to work in a dynamic and measured environment that focuses on student success and retention.
  • Customer Service experience preferred.

Skills, Proficiencies, and/or Knowledge:

Familiar with OSU computer systems and applications. Proficient in Microsoft Office, University web-based applications (Banner, Slate, etc.) and database (SAS) tools.

Strong interpersonal, communication, and problem-solving skills.
