Job description

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Science Gone Mad Instructor will supervise and educate school-age students attending the Science Gone Mad program in the afternoon/evening at a School or Community location.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Engage students in cooperative learning lessons that teach developmentally appropriate Science, Math, Engineering, Art and Technology (STEAM) skills.
  2. Support and supervise program volunteers with assistance of program coordinator including communicating in advance regarding lesson plans and scheduling, monitoring their performance and mentoring them, and clearly articulating expectations.
  3. Pre- and post-test students in a timely manner including prompt scoring and analysis of test scores and communication of student progress with program director, family, and school per program guidelines.
  4. Select and write lessons for students based on results of pre-and post-testing.
  5. Track and maintain instructional materials used in SGM lessons.
  6. Submit lesson plans, attendance, and pre- and post-testing data in an efficient and timely manner.
  7. Explain and provide information about all five YMCA Community Development programs.
  8. Attend required trainings and professional development activities.
  9. Ensure YMCA, school policy and procedures and State/Federal regulations are consistently met.
  10. Organize and prepare the STEM events, field experiences, and recognition ceremonies in coordination with other instructors, the program coordinator, and program director.
  11. Communicate with families about activities outside of the regular afterschool session in a timely manner ensuring that permission slips are received and returned well in advance of outings.
  12. Maintain confidentiality of student records and information.
  13. Keep current on new science, math and technology systems.
  14. Implement lessons centered on asset and character development following YMCA research, training and best practices.
  15. Perform any and all branch duties and association requirements as assigned.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Prepare and implement targeted project-based, cooperative learning lessons that engage students in STEM problem-solving and skill development.
2. Track student attendance and progress and program quality.
3. Maintain instructional materials in good order and repair.
4. Maintain educational records in good order and keep student confidentiality.
5. Articulate lessons clearly.
6. Demonstrate experiments.
7. Supervise youths' safe participation in science experiments, classroom activities and field experiences.
