Job description

Punahou School is currently seeking a Teaching Assistant for Ceramics. Under the direction of the lead teacher, the Teaching Assistant provides support with the educational goals and implementation of the Department's values and aims which promote purposeful exploration towards the creation of visual expressions. This position will facilitate the daily and annual routines of the program while establishing a safe and congenial environment. The ceramic teaching assistant works directly with the teacher to prepare the studio to be a safe, efficient, and friendly working environment for students, faculty, staff and the broader Punahou community. Primary duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Loading, unloading, and firing of electric and gas kilns
  • Formulating glazes
  • Recycling of clay with the use of a vacuum pugmill
  • Organize and inventory ceramic materials
  • Perform minor repairs or adjustments to tools and equipment as needed
  • Assist students with assignments
  • Assist teachers in delivering curriculum
  • Foster creativity and a sense of community

Position Details:
  • Work Year: 9 Months
  • School Year: 2026-2027
  • Work Hours: Monday - Friday, Hours between 6:00 AM - 4:00 PM, Schedule may vary based on operational needs
  • Hourly Rate: $20.00/Hour

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Currently enrolled in a Bachelor of Fine Arts or related program. Completion of a Bachelor of Fine Arts or related degree preferred.
  • Experience with teaching high school students preferred.
  • Ability to inspire trust and confidence, exercise patience, and motivate students.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and cooperatively with others.
  • Demonstrates solid professional and personal ethics: models respect, honesty, dependability, and integrity.
  • Demonstrated passion for art, teaching, and learning.
