Job description

Position: Vice President of Natural and Cultural Resource Management
Status: Full-time Exempt
Reports to: President/CEO
Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill
Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill (SVPH) is on a mission to inspire generations through DISCOVERY, by sharing the legacies of the Kentucky Shakers. SVPH is committed to bridging historic preservation, land conservation, engaged learning and warm hospitality to present an unrivaled destination experience.
Home to the third largest Shaker community in the United States from 1805 until 1910, SVPH manages the country's largest private collection of original 19th century buildings and is the largest National Historic Landmark in Kentucky. Onsite amenities at SVPH include overnight accommodations, dining and catering services, retail shops, event and meeting venues, historical exhibitions and tours, farm and garden area, nature preserve, multi-use trail system, equestrian stable and an extensive calendar of special programs, activities and events.
VP of Natural and Cultural Resource Management
Reporting to and partnering with the President/CEO, the VP of Natural and Cultural Resource Management supports the mission of Shaker Village by providing thoughtful stewardship of the Village's buildings, infrastructure, and natural and cultural landscape so they may be enjoyed by guests today and preserved for future generations.
The VP of Natural and Cultural Resource Management directly supervises the managers overseeing historic preservation, buildings and landscape maintenance, the farm and garden, and the nature preserve at SVPH. As a member of the senior leadership team, the VP of Natural and Cultural Resource Management collaborates to create and implement organizational policies, procedures and long-term strategic plans.
Responsibilities
  • Partners with and supervises Maintenance and Landscape Managers to ensure safe, well-maintained and aesthetically pleasing buildings and grounds.
  • Partners with and supervises Restoration Department to ensure the highest level of historic preservation standards are met during the ongoing work to preserve 34 nineteenth century structures and additional cultural assets.
  • Is intimately familiar with nationally recognized preservation standards (NPS, etc.) and ensures that all work at SVPH meets best practices for the care of a National Historic Landmark and ensures that all eligible projects are conducted to the standards necessary to qualify for the Kentucky Historic Preservation Tax Credit and federal funding.
  • Collaborates with and supervises the Maintenance and Landscape Managers and staff team to develop, update and utilize a property maintenance program, including a proactive, planned maintenance calendar and a capital expense forecasting system for SVPH.
  • Supports and supervises the Natural Resources Director to demonstrate the thoughtful stewardship of land and natural resources, while ensuring guests may enjoy meaningful recreational opportunities on The Preserve.
  • Supports and supervises the Farm Manager to demonstrate the thoughtful stewardship of land and livestock through sustainable agricultural practices while providing farm-to-table produce and proteins for The Trustees' Table restaurant.
  • Oversees the management and operation of the trails, stables and equestrian facilities through the Preserve Manager.
  • Oversees the management and training of staff and volunteers to ensure compliance with health, OSHA, and other applicable safety standards for all work done at SVPH.
  • Thoughtfully collects, reviews, utilizes and shares information on the usage, care and maintenance of SVPH facilities through facility software services and archival documentation.
  • Champions high-quality workmanship and clean, visually appealing aesthetics in all maintenance, restoration, construction and landscaping efforts at SVPH.

Responsibilities as a member of the SVPH Senior Leadership team
  • Plan and coordinate the work of outside vendors, craftsmen and contractors as required, ensuring compliance with accounting and legal standards as set by SVPH.
  • Partner with the Controller/Accounting Department to accurately and efficiently process accounts payable according to SVPH policies and procedures.
  • Ensure stewardship of SVPH monetary resources by creating/receiving accurate estimates and adhering to the requirements of the SVPH budget.
  • Adhere to marketing and branding guidelines, as outlined by CMO/marketing department, in all aspects of their work and that of their department to remain brand compliant.
  • Promote the sustainable use of natural, monetary, human and physical resources.
  • Is familiar with and assists in training staff in SVPH crisis management/emergency procedures.
  • Provide vital input in short and long-term strategic and operational planning.
  • Appropriately represents the organization, its Board and the President/CEO to guests, volunteers and donors.
  • Support a culture of philanthropy at SVPH, in partnership with the Development Office, by communicating the mission and non-profit status of the organization through stories of impact and ensuring that work is documented for tax credit purposes.
  • Support a culture of communication and cooperation among all SVPH departments.
  • Update job knowledge for themselves and staff team by remaining aware of new compliance standards and regulations; participating in educational opportunities; reading professional publications; maintaining personal networks; and participating in professional organizations.
  • Accomplish human resource strategies in partnership with the HR Department by determining roles; communicating and enforcing values, policies and procedures; implementing recruitment, selection, orientation, training, coaching; monitoring, appraising and reviewing job contributions; planning and reviewing compensation strategies.
  • Accomplish marketing and communications mission by completing additional tasks as assigned and related results as needed.

Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's Degree or 5 years equivalent experience in Historic Preservation, Architecture, Engineering, Construction Management, Property/Facility Management or related field. Master's Degree preferred.
  • Minimum 10 years of supervisory/management experience, preferably at executive level.
  • Experience developing and implementing preventative and responsive land stewardship and facility maintenance plans.
  • Experience in project management required.
  • Experience in farm management is preferred.
  • Experience in natural resource management is preferred.
  • Experience with facility management software preferred.
  • Experience with GIS or similar mapping software preferred.

Mental and Physical Requirements
  • Analyze and interpret data.
  • Maintain concentration with time pressures and interruptions.
  • Ability to maintain visual attention for a considerable length of time.
  • Sit and stand for considerable length of time.
  • Required to be able to lift and carry a minimum of 25lbs.
  • Ability to navigate steps, inclines and a variety of surface types to access all areas of built environment at SVPH.

Working Environment and Conditions
  • Requires working some weekends and evenings.
  • Requires availability by phone or email outside of typical working hours.
  • Includes office work, as well as outdoor work in all-weather conditions.
