Job description

The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) serves as the senior financial executive for MFA and is responsible for the strategic leadership, oversight, and management of the organization’s financial operations. The CFO partners closely with executive leadership and the Board to ensure the long-term financial health, operational sustainability, and strategic growth of the organization.

This position oversees all financial planning, budgeting, accounting, forecasting, revenue cycle performance, payer financial analysis, audit coordination, and financial reporting activities for the organization. The CFO plays a critical role in supporting organizational strategy through data-driven financial analysis and operational insight.

The CFO is expected to function as a collaborative executive leader within a physician-led organization and support MFA’s mission, values, and commitment to high-quality patient care.

Financial Leadership & Strategy

  • Lead the organization’s financial strategy and long-term fiscal planning.
  • Develop and oversee annual operating and capital budgets.
  • Prepare financial forecasts and cash flow projections.
  • Provide strategic financial analysis and recommendations to executive leadership and the Board.
  • Monitor organizational financial performance and identify opportunities for operational improvement and financial optimization.
  • Support organizational growth initiatives, strategic partnerships, and service line expansion analysis.
  • Participate in strategic planning and organizational leadership discussions.

Financial Operations & Accounting

  • Oversee all accounting operations, including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll coordination, and financial reporting.
  • Ensure timely and accurate month-end and year-end close processes.
  • Prepare and present monthly financial statements and executive financial reports.
  • Maintain strong internal financial controls and ensure compliance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).
  • Coordinate annual audits, tax filings, and external financial reviews.
  • Manage banking relationships, treasury functions, and cash management activities.

Revenue Cycle Oversight

  • Provide executive oversight of revenue cycle operations, including billing, collections, denials management, and accounts receivable performance.
  • Monitor key revenue cycle metrics and implement strategies to improve financial performance.
  • Collaborate with operational and clinical leadership to improve charge capture, documentation, coding, and reimbursement processes.
  • Evaluate payer reimbursement trends and financial impacts.

Managed Care & Payer Financial Analysis

  • Analyze payer contracts and reimbursement methodologies.
  • Support contract negotiations through financial modeling and reimbursement analysis.
  • Monitor value-based payment arrangements, risk-based contracts, and population health financial performance.
  • Assist leadership in evaluating managed care opportunities and risks.

Compliance & Risk Management

  • Ensure financial compliance with applicable federal, state, payer, and regulatory requirements.
  • Oversee financial aspects of organizational insurance coverage, including malpractice, liability, property, and directors & officers insurance.
  • Participate in organizational risk management initiatives as appropriate.
  • Maintain confidentiality and security of financial and organizational information.

Leadership & Team Development

  • Provide leadership, mentorship, and oversight to finance and revenue cycle staff.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, professionalism, and continuous improvement.
  • Develop departmental goals, performance expectations, and operational metrics.
  • Promote cross-functional collaboration between finance, operations, and clinical leadership.

Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field required.
  • Master’s degree in Business Administration (MBA), Finance, Healthcare Administration, or related field preferred.
  • CPA preferred.

Experience

  • Minimum of 7–10 years of progressive financial leadership experience required.
  • Healthcare financial leadership experience strongly preferred.
  • Experience in physician group practice, ambulatory care, multispecialty medical group, or healthcare delivery organizations preferred.
  • Experience with healthcare reimbursement models, managed care contracting, value-based care initiatives, and revenue cycle management required.
  • Experience working within a physician-led organization preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong knowledge of healthcare finance, budgeting, forecasting, and accounting principles.
  • Understanding of physician practice operations, reimbursement methodologies, and payer contracting.
  • Ability to analyze complex financial data and communicate findings effectively.
  • Strong leadership, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to build collaborative relationships across clinical, operational, and administrative teams.
  • High level of professionalism, discretion, and integrity.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Advanced proficiency in financial systems, Microsoft Excel, and healthcare financial reporting tools.

Reporting Structure

The CFO reports directly to the Board President/Executive Leadership and serves as a member of the executive leadership team.

The CFO directly oversees finance, accounting, and revenue cycle functions and collaborates closely with administrative and clinical leadership.
