Partial Discharge Engineer information

What is the difference between Partial Discharge Engineer vs Electrical Test Engineer?

AspectPartial Discharge EngineerElectrical Test Engineer
CertificationsPD testing certifications, electrical engineering degreesElectrical testing certifications, engineering degrees
Work EnvironmentHigh-voltage labs, power plants, substationsManufacturing facilities, power stations, testing labs
Industry UsagePower transmission, distribution, electrical equipmentElectrical equipment testing, quality assurance

Partial Discharge Engineers focus on detecting and analyzing partial discharge phenomena in high-voltage equipment, primarily using specialized testing methods. Electrical Test Engineers perform a broader range of electrical tests on equipment and systems. While both roles require electrical engineering knowledge and certifications, Partial Discharge Engineers specialize in high-voltage diagnostics, making their work more specific to high-voltage equipment maintenance and failure prevention.

What are some typical challenges a Partial Discharge Engineer might face when diagnosing insulation issues in high-voltage equipment?

Partial Discharge Engineers often encounter challenges such as distinguishing between different types of discharge signals and separating true partial discharge events from background noise or interference. Working in varied environments, from substations to manufacturing sites, they must adapt testing techniques to suit different equipment and site conditions. Collaboration with asset managers and maintenance teams is key, as findings must be communicated clearly to ensure timely and effective maintenance decisions. Staying updated on evolving testing technologies and safety protocols is also an ongoing requirement in this role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Partial Discharge Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Partial Discharge Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical engineering principles, experience with high-voltage systems, and often a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with partial discharge measurement equipment, diagnostic software, and industry standards such as IEC 60270 is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication skills help in interpreting test results and conveying findings to clients or teams. These competencies are crucial for ensuring the reliability and safety of electrical assets by detecting insulation issues early and recommending appropriate interventions.

What is a Partial Discharge Engineer?

A Partial Discharge Engineer is a specialist who detects, analyzes, and mitigates partial discharges in electrical insulation systems, particularly in high-voltage equipment like transformers, cables, and switchgear. Partial discharges are small electrical sparks that can deteriorate insulation and eventually lead to equipment failure. These engineers use specialized testing equipment and diagnostic techniques to assess insulation condition, recommend maintenance, and help prevent costly outages. Their work is critical in ensuring the reliability and safety of electrical power systems.

Job description

Position Summary:

The Test Engineer is responsible for overseeing the final test department by executing, analyzing, and maintaining electrical and mechanical test processes for medium and high-voltage power cables. This role ensures products meet applicable standards, customer specifications, and internal quality requirements through rigorous testing, data analysis, and process control.

Key Responsibilities

Supervision: responsible for Supervision of the Final Test operators as well as technical (hands-on testing and diagnostics) and procedural (ensuring cables are tested per specification and industry standards).

Testing and Validation: perform electrical testing, including:

  • Partial Discharge (PD) testing
  • AC Withstand testing
  • Insulation resistance and continuity testing

Conduct mechanical and physical tests:

  • Tensile strength and elongation
  • Dimensional verification
  • Validate cable performance against applicable industry standards (UL 1072, ANSI/ICEA S-97-682, ANSI/ICEA S-94-649, AEIC CS8)

Process Control & Quality Assurance:

  • Ensure adherence to documented quality control procedures and test methods
  • Monitor critical test parameters and identify deviations or anomalies
  • Support nonconformance investigations and corrective actions (RCA, CAPA)
  • Maintain traceability of test results to material lots and production runs

Equipment & Calibration:

  • Set up, operate, and troubleshoot high-voltage test equipment
  • Ensure all test instruments are calibrated and maintained per schedule
  • Assist in validation and commissioning of new test systems.

Data Analysis & Reporting:

  • Record, analyze, and interpret test data for compliance and trends to ensure Certified Test Reports are completed on time.
  • Support internal audits and customer inspections with accurate documentation.

Continuous Improvement:

  • Identify opportunities to improve test efficiency, accuracy, and repeatability
  • Support implementation of new testing methods or technologies
  • Collaborate with engineering and production teams to resolve quality issues

Education

  • AS/BS degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field (Equivalent experience in cable testing environments may be considered)

Experience

  • 1-3 years in cable manufacturing, high-voltage testing, or related field
  • Hands-on experience with MV/HV cable testing (PD, AC withstand preferred)
  • Familiarity with industry standards ((UL 1072, ANSI/ICEA S-97-682, ANSI/ICEA S-94-649, AEIC CS8)

Skills Required

  • Detail-oriented with strong analytical thinking
  • Effective communication with cross0functional teams and stakeholders
  • Ability to work independently and in cross-functional teams
  • Strong understanding of electrical test principles and insulation systems (XLPE, EPR)
  • Experience with high-voltage test equipment and safety practices
  • Ability to read and interpret technical specifications and test standards
  • Working knowledge of quality systems (ISO 9001 preferred)
  • May require shift work or overtime based on production demands

  • In summary, This role bridges engineering, quality, and production, ensuring every cable released has been validated electrically, mechanically, and procedurally before reaching the customer.
