Job description

Summary The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board's (MPRB) Lifeguards are responsible for monitoring the facilities and activities at the beaches, waterparks, and pools. Lifeguards will communicate and enforce rules/ regulations in a personable and professional manner. Working under the direct supervision of the Aquatics Manager and designee, seasonal Lifeguards will ensure the safety of patron in and around the aquatic facilities and follow their training when responding to any incidents.

This position works 32-40 hours per week, part- time. Varied working hours including 5:30am-9:30pm, Monday-Sunday. Programs and facilities operate routinely daily from 10:30am- 8:30pm.

Our picturesque lakes, neighborhood parks, recreation centers, and diversified programming make the park system an important component of what makes Minneapolis a great place to live, play and work. What You'll Do Apply knowledge of the rules and regulations for the beach, waterpark, or pool. Respond to basic public inquiries and direct concerns to the appropriate authority.

Lead or assist in aquatic programming and swim lessons. Maintain a proactive approach to safety and risk management by enforcing rules, scanning swimmers for distress and directing weak swimmers to remain in shallow water. Communicate issues, concerns, incidents, and/ or safety risks in a timely manner.

Provide rescue and emergency first aid/CPR care when needed. Complete reports and forms associated with patron care and facility statistics. Operate and maintain all safety equipment and supplies.

Attend training sessions; maintain all required certifications and forwards copies to Aquatics Manager. Demonstrate and support MPRB customer service standards. Uphold and enforce all MPRB aquatic policies and procedures.

Monitor activities to ensure adherence to rules and safety procedures. Report any damaged or unsafe equipment to pool supervisor. Perform general maintenance and janitorial duties to ensure an orderly, friendly, clean and safe environment for guests, co-workers and the general public.

Attend all required in-service trainings held from May through August. Assist MPRB in identifying and addressing the park and recreation needs of underserved and under-represented communities. What To Bring Need to Have: Current American Red Cross Lifeguard/ First Aid/ CPR/ AED Certification.

Nice to Have: Experience lifeguarding at a pool, beach, or waterpark. Skills Crucial to Success in This Role: Ability to remain calm and make appropriate decisions in emergency situations. Good cross cultural communication skills and the ability to work with a diverse population.

Ability to communicate effectively in English, both written and verbal. Ability to effectively communicate in both one on one and group settings. Outstanding customer service principles and practices and standards for a diverse customer base.

Must be able to work entire season and attend in-service trainings (May through August). Physical Requirements: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential duties of this job. Ability to stand, walk, run, climb, balance, twist, stoop, squat, kneel, crawl, crouch, reach, grasp, feel, talk, hear, see, walk backward, walk on rough and/or uneven terrain, and climb ladders and stairs. Ability to lift and move up to 25 pounds daily. Ability to work outdoors in extreme summer weather conditions.
