What is a part time virtual electrical engineering job?

Part time virtual electrical engineering jobs are positions where professionals work remotely, usually on a flexible or reduced-hour schedule, to perform tasks related to electrical engineering. These roles often involve designing circuits, working on electronic systems, troubleshooting, or providing technical support, all from a remote location. Virtual electrical engineers use online collaboration tools, simulation software, and digital communication to complete their assignments and interact with clients or teams. This setup allows for work-life balance and can benefit companies seeking specialized skills without hiring full-time, on-site staff.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a part time virtual electrical engineer?

To thrive as a Part Time Virtual Electrical Engineer, you need a strong background in electrical engineering principles, circuit design, and troubleshooting, typically supported by a degree in electrical engineering or a related field. Proficiency with CAD software (such as AutoCAD or Altium Designer), simulation tools (like MATLAB or SPICE), and remote collaboration platforms is essential. Excellent time management, self-motivation, and clear written communication are standout soft skills for managing independent work and client interactions remotely. These skills and qualities are crucial for delivering high-quality engineering solutions efficiently while working off-site.

What are the most common challenges faced by part time virtual electrical engineers, and how can they be addressed?

Part-time virtual electrical engineers often face challenges such as coordinating with on-site teams across different time zones, managing project communication remotely, and accessing specialized design tools or hardware. To overcome these, clear communication protocols, regular virtual meetings, and cloud-based collaboration platforms are essential. Additionally, proactively clarifying project expectations and deliverables helps ensure smooth workflow despite the physical distance and reduced hours.

If you have prior academic or industrial experience, a passion for hands-on, project-based teaching, and would like to share your knowledge and wisdom with an enthusiastic group of students and indeed shape the next generation of our nation's workforce, we want you in our classrooms and laboratories

The Electrical and Computer Engineering Department (www.rowan.edu/ece) at Rowan University is growing, with the brand-new B.S. in Electrical Engineering Technology and M.S. in Systems Engineering programs added to our flagship B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. programs in Electrical and Computer Engineering. To support this robust growth, we seek energetic and innovative teacher-scholars as Adjunct Professors who are interested in sharing their knowledge and wisdom with our students and share our commitment to excellence in engineering education.

Our Adjunct Professors, who are typically active or retired academic or industry professionals, are an important part of the fabric of the Rowan ECE community, bringing their unique experiences and perspectives to our department. The successful candidates will be responsible for teaching innovative, project-based courses primarily in the electrical and computer engineering and electrical engineering technology programs. These courses may be core or elective, depending on the applicant's area of expertise. We welcome qualified and dedicated individuals with a background in all areas of ECE, including but not limited to:

Core topics

  • Digital and embedded systems,
  • Computer architecture,
  • Circuits, electronics, power electronics,
  • Programmable logic controllers, automation design
  • VLSI design, chip design, advanced chip manufacturing, solid-state systems
  • Control systems,
  • Signal and image processing,
  • Communication systems, including traditional, modern, and industrial communication systems
  • Electromagnetics and modern antenna systems

  • Project management
  • Reliability and quality engineering
  • Your favorite emerging topic in any area that relates to ECE, EET, or  Systems Engineering

As a department, we greatly value experiential and project-based learning, integrating emerging topics and technologies into the curriculum, and providing an outstanding, state-of-the-art array of equipment, instruments, rapid prototyping, fabrication and computational resources to support such activities. Our dedication to project-based learning is reflected in both of our ECE and EET curricula, as all our courses include lab/project components. As a result, we seek individuals who share this dedication, possess the skills and passion to develop innovative hands-on lab projects or other experiential learning activities using appropriate modern tools, and have the ability to integrate such projects/activities into the course content.

Applicants must have earned at least a Master of Science degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related discipline. Individuals with industry and/or academic experience are particularly encouraged to apply. 10 years or more of relevant industry experience, along with a Bachelor's degree, may, in some cases, be used in lieu of the Master of Science degree requirement.

Effective communication skills, the capacity to collaborate with multi-disciplinary student and faculty teams, and the capability to teach in a project-based environment are essential. The position is part-time, non-tenure-track, with renewable contracts contingent upon performance (including student evaluations), departmental needs, and university and budgetary approvals. The review of applications will commence immediately and continue as new needs arise.

For full consideration, applications should include the following items:

  1. A cover letter summarizing qualifications and the applicant's interest in the position
  2. Current and detailed CV
  3. Statement of teaching interests, including the list of courses the applicant feels most qualified to teach, and teaching philosophy.
  4. Names and contact information for two professional references (an optional personal reference may also be added)
  5. Unofficial transcripts. Please note that successful candidates will be asked to submit official transcripts. Therefore, submitting an official transcript at the time of application, if available, will expedite the hiring process. Transcripts issued to the applicant are acceptable.
  6. Optionally, additional relevant documentation (such as student evaluations from former teaching engagements, examples of innovative curricular components developed by the applicant, examples of industrial design experience that may be leveraged in class, etc.) may be submitted in an Appendix as a separate file.

The application must be submitted through our online application system. https://go.rowan.edu/adjunct4RowanECE

Questions can be directed to polikar@rowan.edu, Dr. Robi Polikar, Department Head, Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering.   Additional departmental information can be found at http://www.rowan.edu/ece

All positions are contingent upon budget appropriations.

Note: Candidates must be eligible to work in the United States. The University will not sponsor a visa for this position.

In compliance with The State of New Jersey's Pay Transparency Act, and in accordance with the current MOA, Rowan University adjuncts are provided with a minimum of $2,225 per credit for all courses taught, with a maximum teaching load of 8 credits per semester and 12 credits in an academic year. Courses will be assigned to instructors by College & Department on an as-needed basis.
