What is a part-time UX designer?

A part-time UX (User Experience) designer is a professional who works fewer hours than a standard full-time schedule to improve the usability, accessibility, and overall experience of digital products like websites and apps. They focus on understanding user needs, conducting research, creating wireframes and prototypes, and collaborating with other team members to ensure a positive user experience. Part-time UX designers may work with multiple clients or companies and often have flexible hours, making this role ideal for those seeking work-life balance or supplemental income.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a part-time UX designer?

To thrive as a Part Time UX Designer, you need a solid understanding of user-centered design, wireframing, prototyping, and usability testing, generally supported by a degree in design or related experience. Familiarity with design tools such as Figma, Sketch, Adobe XD, and user research platforms is typically required. Strong communication, empathy, and collaboration skills help you work effectively with stakeholders and understand user needs. These skills and qualities ensure the creation of intuitive, user-friendly products that drive engagement even within limited work hours.

How do part-time UX designers typically collaborate with full-time team members to ensure project continuity?

Part-time UX designers often work closely with full-time colleagues by attending regular team meetings, maintaining clear documentation, and using collaboration tools like Figma, Slack, or Jira. They usually focus on specific project tasks or deliverables and coordinate their schedules to overlap with key team milestones. Effective communication and proactive status updates help ensure seamless handoffs and project consistency, despite reduced working hours.

What are part-time jobs in UX?

A part-time user experience (UX) professional works to design, develop, and improve the elements that affect the experience for the user of a website, software, or application. Your job duties often include performing research to find out the expectations of users. You create graphic elements, test the user interface (UI), and ensure that interaction between the user and the software or site is intuitive and easy to understand. You can use many different programming languages for this, but your employer may have a preference. As a part-time worker, you handle your job responsibilities in less than 40 hours per week.

  •  Apply Section 508, accessibility, web-writing, plain-language, editorial, and content-governance standards throughout the content lifecycle.
  •  Coordinate with content owners, subject-matter experts, and technical teams to gather information, clarify requirements, obtain approvals, and maintain accurate and timely digital content.
  •  Support the maintenance and continuous improvement of CMS workflows, publishing processes, website features, and content-management practices.
  •  Perform routine content quality assurance, including identifying and correcting broken links, spelling and grammatical errors, outdated content, formatting issues, and required policy updates.
  •  Review website traffic, analytics, user feedback, and other available information to identify opportunities to improve usability, navigation, findability, and overall user experience.
  •  Maintain and apply standards, styles, guidelines, metadata, organizational structures, and other practices that support consistent and effective digital communications.
  •  Collaborate across organizational and project teams to support content updates, website enhancements, accessibility remediation, and other digital-content initiatives.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in communications, Marketing, Digital Media/Media Studies, another relevant business discipline, or equivalent applicable professional experience.
  • Strong experience with Drupal CMS, content-management workflows, and web publishing.
  •  Experience using Microsoft and Microsoft 365 platforms and services.
  •  Working knowledge of basic web technologies, including HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
  •  Demonstrated experience writing and editing content for the web.
  •  Familiarity with Federal Plain Language Guidelines and the ability to develop clear, audience-focused digital content.
  •  Knowledge of web best practices, accessibility standards, and compliance requirements, including Section 508 considerations.
  •  Experience participating on project teams and collaborating effectively across organizational and functional groups.
  •  Strong written and verbal communication skills, attention to detail, and the ability to organize and manage multiple content activities and priorities.
  •  Must be a U.S. Citizen and have the ability to obtain and maintain a NACI or higher-level investigation/clearance.

Preferred

  •  Knowledge of federal grant-making organizations or the federal grants process.
  •  Experience managing content for large, public-facing government or enterprise websites.
  •  Experience using web analytics or user-feedback data to recommend content and usability improvements.
  •  Experience supporting content migration, restructuring, taxonomy, metadata, or other large-scale content-improvement initiatives.
