THE POSITION
The Lowell School District seeks outstanding, highly qualified candidates for a instructional assistant, approximately 7 hours per day. Lowell School District is on a four-day student contact week. Most weeks will only be a four day work week, however, some will be scheduled for a five day work week. The calendar will be provided upon hire.
POSITION SUMMARY
Instructional assistants are assigned by the building principal to assist the teachers in clerical, one on one work, groups, and student supervision duties of special education students. The instructional assistant is directly responsible to the SPED or classroom teacher based on the assignment level by the district. Work schedule will vary depending on the needs of the district and student. Future work days and hours may vary as needed. Additional hours may be required as needed.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Tutoring and/or supervising special education students in either the resource room or the regular classroom, or online asassigned by the special education coordinator.
  • Keep anecdotal records of student progress in student booklets.
  • Attend and participate in individual education program meetings for students as required by the special education teacher or director.
  • Assist in the administering of academic tests.
  • Maintain reinforcement activities for students involved in the special education program.
  • Report student progress to the special education teacher or director.
  • Type necessary reports, if required by teacher/director.
  • The assistant will also accept other duties assigned by the district.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  1. High school diploma or equivalent
  2. Be at least 18 years of age
  3. Assistants will be required to have the following characteristics and/or skills:
    1. Personable and friendly
    2. Retain confidential information
    3. Organizational skills and abilities
    4. Neat and orderly
    5. Punctual
    6. Supportive of district programs
    7. Good attendance

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  1. Experience working with children in an educational setting
  2. Two years of college course work or ability to pass paraprofessional test

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENT:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to sit. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus. The physical demands and the work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.
