Job description

Description of Position The Tutoring Specialist supports the daily operations of Tutoring Services within the Center for Learning and Innovation (CLI). This position delivers direct academic support to students through by-appointment tutoring and academic coaching, coordinates the embedded tutoring program, and supervises part-time tutoring staff. The Tutoring Specialist also staffs the Information Services Desk, leads outreach and student engagement events such as Finals Fest, and contributes to the development and delivery of learning resources and workshops.

The position requires subject-area expertise in either writing or mathematics and a commitment to student success. Key Responsibilities: Tutoring Services & Academic Coaching Provide by-appointment tutoring in either writing and/or mathematics, Canvas, and Office 365, delivering individualized academic support to students. Provide academic coaching to students, supporting goal-setting, self-regulation, study strategies, and academic persistence.

Supervise and support part-time tutors, including scheduling, day-to-day guidance, and ongoing professional development. Assist in the planning, development, and facilitation of synchronous and asynchronous workshops on study skills, time management, and technology use, including AI tools and Canvas LMS. Support the development and implementation of new learning resources and educational tools that align with student success goals.

Information Services & Student Assistance Staff the Information Services Desk, serving as a primary point of contact for student, faculty, and staff inquiries related to Tutoring Services. Provide reference and general assistance, helping students navigate academic support services, technology tools, and campus resources. Assist students with a variety of technology-related questions including MS Word, Canvas, Zoom, and basic AI tools.

Help troubleshoot minor technical issues with student devices or Tutoring Services equipment. Outreach, Events & Marketing Coordinate and lead student engagement events such as Finals Fest, managing planning, logistics, and execution in collaboration with CLI staff. Participate in Tutoring Services marketing efforts and outreach activities, promoting available services across the student body and at multiple campus locations.

Represent Tutoring Services at campus events, orientations, and other opportunities to connect students with academic support resources. Assist with the development of promotional materials, digital content, and outreach communications. Program Coordination Coordinate the embedded tutoring program, including faculty outreach, tutor placement, scheduling, and ongoing communication with instructional staff.

Maintain accurate records and compile usage statistics for embedded tutoring and other Tutoring Services programs for reporting purposes. Update and maintain select web content and digital resources related to Tutoring Services, ensuring information is current and accessible. Support the coordination of scheduling for Tutoring Services appointments and staff coverage.

Administrative & Operational Support Provide internal departmental support including scheduling appointments, preparing reports, handouts, and forms. Assist with data entry and the compilation of usage statistics for reporting purposes. Provide support for a variety of special projects as directed by the Director of Library and Tutoring Services.

Assist with other administrative duties as needed to ensure smooth Tutoring Services operations. Minimum Expectations & Requirements Education: Associate's degree Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: Subject-area proficiency in writing or mathematics sufficient to provide by-appointment and embedded tutoring at the college level. Ability to obtain Academic Coaching certification within 3 months of hire.

Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite: strong skills in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, with the ability to create, edit, and manage documents, spreadsheets, and presentations. Excellent written and oral communication skills, with the ability to adapt language and tone to suit various audiences and contexts including emails, reports, and presentations. Demonstrated comfort with and/or willingness to use artificial intelligence tools as part of regular job duties, including in student-facing instruction and academic support contexts.

Willingness to engage in ongoing professional development, including pursuing new certifications, expanding subject-area knowledge, and developing skills in emerging tools and tutoring approaches. Demonstrated problem-solving skills. Accuracy and attention to detail, with careful review of work across documentation, data entry, and reporting.

Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, prioritize effectively, and pivot quickly in response to changing needs, deadlines, or organizational priorities. Adaptability and openness to change: comfortable in evolving environments with a willingness to learn new skills, processes, and technologies. Comfortable with public speaking, leading workshops, and having voice and/or face recorded for instructional or training purposes.

Basic skills in updating website content, with the expectation of achieving proficiency within 3 months. Willingness to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends, to cover operational hours as needed. Regular attendance is an essential job function as it demonstrates dependability toward the performance of job duties.

Preferred Skills & Abilities Experience: Experience working in a higher education setting. Prior tutoring, academic coaching, or student success experience. Experience supervising staff or student workers.

Customer service mindset: a dedication to supporting students, faculty, and staff effectively, ensuring needs are met efficiently and with empathy. Ability and willingness to travel to other campuses and centers as needed to provide support.
