Job description

Job Description: Student Support Services (SSS) tutors must possess expertise in specified academic content areas and in study skills. Tutors meet with SSS program participants on an individual or group basis and are responsible for facilitating the arrangement of times and locations for tutoring sessions. Tutors must be flexible, patient, and sensitive to the specific needs of the SSS student population.

This position is limited to twenty-nine (29) hours per week. The Professional Tutor is a part-time instructor position that facilitates student learning by helping to clarify specific course content, reinforcing instructional efforts and providing/integrating the use of appropriate study strategies.  This position is governed by state and federal laws and agency/institution policy.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  1. Provides individual and/or small group tutoring sessions in approved subjects with assigned tutee(s) at scheduled times in Tutoring Central or other designated or pre-approved areas, or via video conferencing as needed.
  2. Adheres to all institutional tutoring guidelines and training.
  3. Outline an hourly tutoring schedule weekly.
  4. Responsible for helping students learn and understand new concepts and improve their academic performance.
  5. Teach skills regarding study strategies, note-taking, and answering test questions.
  6. Assist with completing assignments, homework, projects, test preparation, and papers related to the tutor’s subject area.
  7. Informs and/or consults with tutoring supervisor if problems are encountered or the need arises for assistance related to a specific tutoring situation.
  8. Works cooperatively with institutional and support staff to deliver a cohesive tutoring program and responds professionally to diverse student needs.
  9. Participates in all tutoring training sessions and tutoring staff meetings as requested.
  10. Respect students’ right to confidentiality and follow legal guidelines regarding dispersing information.
  11. Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of each tutoring session and report tutoring records as required.

 Required Qualifications:

  1. A bachelor’s degree in the tutoring content area or closely related area.
  2. A grade of B or higher in all courses and or academic subject areas for which tutoring services will be offered.
  3. An official transcript.
  4. A cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher in all post-secondary course work.
  5. Ability to establish rapport with students and communicate well with students and faculty
  6. Applicable knowledge of selected subject area(s).

OTHER JOB-RELATED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE MAY BE SUBSTITUTED FOR ALL OR PART OF THESE BASIC REQUIREMENTS, EXCEPT FOR CERTIFICATION OR LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS, UPON APPROVAL OF THE QUALIFICATIONS REVIEW COMMITTEE.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Teaching/tutoring experience, particularly in post-secondary courses.
  2. Other relevant work experience that demonstrates knowledge of the content or the ability to work with students and communicate ideas effectively.
