What does a part time tutor do?

As a part-time tutor, your primary responsibilities are to help students improve their understanding of class material, help with homework, and work to develop positive study habits. Your duties may have you work with a group of students or provide private tutor sessions for one-on-one assistance. A tutor can work with students of any age and may address several subjects or only focus on one. You may travel to the student's home, offer services from a tutoring center, or tutor virtually through an online platform. You may be asked to provide reports and communicate with parents on the student's progress.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a part time tutor, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Part Time Tutor, you generally need subject matter expertise, a relevant academic background, and strong instructional abilities. Excellent communication, patience, and adaptability are standout soft skills in this role. These skills ensure effective knowledge transfer, engage students of diverse backgrounds, and foster positive learning outcomes.

What are some common challenges faced by part-time tutors, and how can they be managed effectively?

To address these, effective communication with students and parents is crucial for scheduling and setting clear expectations. Developing a flexible approach to lesson planning and utilizing a variety of teaching resources can also help accommodate different learners. Staying organized and seeking support from fellow tutors or supervisors can further ease the workload and improve the tutoring experience.

Job description

About the Role
At Tutor Me Education, we connect passionate educators with neurodivergent students for high-impact, 1:1 in-home tutoring. As an In-Home Bilingual Spanish Special Education Tutor, you'll deliver personalized academic instruction primarily in Spanish, along with socio-emotional support and patient behavioral guidance aligned to each student's learning style and IEP goals - right in their home.
Because our tutors act as a vital bridge for our students, professional fluency in both Spanish and English is required. While tutoring sessions will be conducted in Spanish, you must be fully comfortable and fluent in English to communicate student progress, strategies, and updates with families, guardians, and school staff who may only speak English.
This is a flexible, part-time W-2 employee role. Start with one student (~2-10 hrs/week) and take on additional students whenever you'd like to grow your hours and income.
What You'll Do
  • Lead engaging 1:1 sessions in Spanish tailored to students with diverse learning needs
  • Implement creative lesson plans in Spanish aligned to each student's IEP goals (full resources and support from our team)
  • Adapt academic materials to each student's unique learning profile and language needs
  • Track progress after each session and maintain open, empathetic communication with parents and guardians (communicating in English or Spanish as needed by the family)
  • Foster a safe, inclusive, and culturally responsive environment that builds confidence and resilience
Who We're Looking For
  • AA, BA, or higher (Special Education, Psychology, or Education preferred)
  • Hands-on experience supporting students with special needs or learning differences (e.g., ASD, ADHD, Dyslexia) - currently enrolled college students with this experience are encouraged to apply
  • Bilingual fluency in Spanish and English (Required) - must be fully fluent to deliver instruction in Spanish and comfortably communicate progress in English to English-speaking families and school staff
  • Empathy, patience, and a student-first approach
  • Reliable vehicle for local travel to client homes
  • Ability to pass a background check
Pay
$25-$35+ per hour, based on your credentials, specialization, and the needs of the student you're matched with.
Most roles fall in the $25-$35+ range; higher rates apply for credentialed or specialized tutors, higher-need cases, and bilingual (Spanish/English) matches.
Why Join
  • Real impact: build lasting 1:1 bonds and help shape a student's trajectory
  • Support: specialized curriculum resources and a dedicated team for student matching
  • Perks: performance-based incentives, referral program, mileage, technology reimbursement, and the CalSavers retirement option

Ready to make a difference? Apply in a few minutes and we'll match you with a student near you.
Tutor Me Education is an Equal Opportunity Employer. We celebrate all neurotypes.
Benefits
  • Mileage
  • Technology Reimbursement
  • Performance Bonus Incentive
  • CalSavers Retirement Plan
