Position
Join our team at Renton Technical College as a "On-the-Job" High School Completion Instructor! This position supports our "On-the-Job" High School Completion model, which allows students to earn high school credit while participating in workforce training, employment, apprenticeships, or other career-connected learning opportunities. The model blends academic instruction, guided practice, and workplace-based learning to support students in completing high school requirements through relevant, career-aligned experiences. The instructor is responsible for supporting, evaluating, and documenting student learning connected to workplace training and industry-aligned skill development. Responsibilities include collaboration with employers, workforce training providers, and community partners to align instruction, monitor student progress, and support credit attainment toward a high school diploma.
Reporting directly to the Dean and Associate Dean of College & Career Pathways, this position is responsible for providing individualized and/or group instruction for adults with a wide range of academic, workforce, and career goals.
This is an ABE (Adult Basic Education) adjunct faculty teaching position. The schedule of hours and dates may vary and will be established based upon assignment. Teaching assignments will include off-site, online, hybrid, and community-embedded instruction.
This position has been designated as a bargaining unit position represented by the Renton Federation of Teachers (RFT) Employees Association. Renton Technical College, located southeast of Seattle, has provided quality education in a variety of occupations for over 80 years. Our professional-technical certificate and degree programs offer entry and mid-level training in the areas of allied health, trades and industry, culinary, business, technology, and automotive. Our outstanding college & career pathways program with classes in adult basic education, English as a second language, and GED preparation is available to those who need additional preparation before entering a training program and for those who simply wish to improve their math and English skills. Career Education and apprenticeships degrees round out our offerings.
Key Responsibilities / Essential Functions Include
  • Provide leadership in working to improve access and successful educational outcomes for underrepresented student populations.
  • Develop contextualized curriculum and alternative delivery methods and strive to create a positive learning environment for students using diverse teaching methods to support and enhance student success.
  • Assist in developing, assessing and analyzing program outcomes for the purpose of program improvement and enhanced student learning.
  • Assess, monitor, and document student performance.
  • Advise students in meeting their educational goals; complete required paperwork and submit required attendance.
  • Maintain student records such as grades using the Canvas learning management system.
  • Attend scheduled College & Career Pathways department and team meetings as appropriate.
  • Fulfill part-time faculty responsibilities in accordance with the negotiated agreement and College policies.
  • Support the College's mission by creating a learning environment of mutual respect and fairness, while encouraging creative and critical thinking through an equity lens.
  • Effectively teach the adopted curriculum for ABE.
  • Develop curriculum and assessment methods to include individual assignments, group projects, quizzes and exams.
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with students and staff.
  • Communicate professionally and effectively, both orally and in writing, with college employees, departments and outside agencies.
  • Maintain regular attendance and punctuality.
  • Perform other related projects and assignments as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Experience working with individuals from diverse racial, ethnic, linguistic, cultural, religious, gender, socio-economic, ability, and educational backgrounds, and a demonstrated commitment to fostering an inclusive and equitable learning environment.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Education, Adult Education, Human Services, Workforce Development, or a related field, and one year or more of experience working with adult learners, opportunity youth, workforce training programs, or high school completion populations; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Familiarity with workforce development, community-based organizations, apprenticeship or training programs, and/or employer-based learning environments.
  • Ability to coordinate with employers, workforce training providers, community organizations, and internal college departments to support student success and program implementation.
  • Experience assessing student progress, documenting learning outcomes, and supporting competency- or credit-based educational models.
  • Ability to design engaging, interactive, and culturally responsive learning experiences for adult learners.
  • Ability to work effectively with students whose first language is not English and with students from varied educational and employment backgrounds.
  • Experience using a variety of instructional, coaching, case management, or support strategies to address diverse learning styles and student needs.
  • Ability to independently manage partnerships, communication, scheduling, and follow-through across multiple stakeholders and locations.
  • Excellent leadership and interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Demonstrated attention to detail required as well as previous experience maintaining accurate records, managing multiple tasks, and planning and organizing work in order to meet changing priorities and deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to promote universal design and accessibility. Proficiency in (or ability to learn within 6 month of hire) the production of accessible content, whether print or electronic.
  • Ability to represent the college in a positive and professional manner, while using tact, discretion and courtesy.
  • Ability to speak a regionally top spoken language other than English is preferred (Spanish, Vietnamese, Russian, Somali, and Chinese).

Working Conditions:
Working hours and location are varied depending on the teaching assignment, and may include, daytime, evening, or weekend work. Work is mostly sedentary in nature, performed in an office environment. Frequent use of a computer and exposure to terminal screens is required. May drive/travel to trainings, conferences, and/or college events.

In the interest of providing a healthy, safe and secure educational and work environment, and in order to meet the requirements of federal legislation, it is the policy of Renton Technical College to maintain an alcohol and drug-free workplace for our employees and students.
Candidates will be asked to provide documentation of unofficial transcripts of graduate coursework. This is an adjunct faculty position contracted on a quarterly basis. Depending on the start date of the faculty, the contract received may be prorated. Lecture (theory) credits are compensated at $1,090 per credit, which includes scheduled class time and final exam days. All guided practice instructional credits for adjunct will be paid with an additional pay factor of 1.33. Future advancement in base salary, up to the current maximum of $1,640 per credit, is based upon a combination of years of service accrued at our college and professional development activity.
Degree Stipend: Master's or Doctorate degree stipends are paid on a prorated per credit rate.
The person hired is required to provide authorization for employment in the United States. All offers of employment are contingent to background checks, including employment and required degree/credential verification. Information from the background check will not necessarily preclude employment but will be considered in determining the applicant's suitability and competence to perform successfully in the position. Finalists are required to complete the Sexual Misconduct Disclosure form as required under RCW 288.112.080. Post offer, pre-employment criminal background checks are also required.

Adjunct faculty may become eligible for benefits if they work two (2) consecutive quarters at 50% or more of full time academic load in order to qualify for benefits (based on instructional hours only - benefits would begin on the first day of the working month after working 50% or more for two consecutive quarters).
Newly-hired adjunct faculty are eligible for PEBB insurance benefits when they have taught 50 percent or more of a full-time workload* for two consecutive quarters at one or more public higher education institutions, going on benefits the start of the second quarter at 50% or more. Medical, dental, life and long term disability insurance benefits are provided as currently administered under the
Adjunct faculty who initially meet the State Board Retirement Plan Eligibility criteria after June 30, 2011 are given the option to participate in the State Board Plan (TIA) or to participate in TRS 3, and have 30 days to make a choice. The eligibility threshold for participation in the State Board Retirement Plan (TIA) is 50 percent of a full-time workload* at one or more college districts or the State Board for two consecutive quarters. There may be other options available under limited circumstances.
*Half time is defined as one-half of the full-time academic workload as determined by each institution, except that half time for community and technical colleges faculty employees is governed by RCW 28B.50.489.
