Job description

Are you an educator committed to growth and collaborative collegiality? Are you eager to teach in a school dedicated to supporting strong academic and community-oriented student habits without the technological and behavioral distractions common in other schools? Consider joining our growing and joyful school community.

An independent school for girls in grades 6-12, guided by the teachings of the Catholic Church, Montrose School was founded in 1979 and is located in the welcoming community of Medfield, 17 miles southwest of Boston. Montrose School attracts a talented and growing student population from over 50 towns and communities. The students and their families as well as the faculty and staff are noted for their commitment to the school's mission - educating young women who are called to greatness.

Montrose School seeks a part-time Performing Arts Technical Director to plan, coordinate, and execute our school's three (3) large scale theater productions per school year. Under the direction of the Performing Arts Producer, the Technical Director will oversee all technical elements-including set design, construction, lighting, sound, and props-while fostering a collaborative, student-centered environment. The incumbent will work closely with the Production Team to deliver high-quality shows while guiding students to develop technical skills, confidence, teamwork, and accountability.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Production & Design: Collaborate with directors to execute technical plans; design and build sets; and guide student designers on lighting, sound, and prop concepts.
  • Student Mentorship: Recruit, train, and supervise student crews on backstage operations, tool safety, and construction techniques. Support students during rehearsals and performances, including cue development, tech week (typically 6+ weeks annually), and live transitions.
  • Logistics & Safety: Coordinate production schedules, manage equipment/specs, oversee backstage safety, and lead the "strike" (dismantling/storage) after each production.

A compelling candidate will have a Bachelor's degree, proven experience in technical theater (set construction, lighting, and sound design) and strong knowledge of theater safety, excellent organization, and a gift for mentoring and motivating students. Please submit a letter of interest along with your resume and references.
