WHO WE ARE
The Mayerson JCC connects people so that they can live happier and fuller lives, creating a more vibrant Jewish community. The JCC helps to foster social connections between its members and guests alike, bringing people together through a wide variety of programs and events. With an expansive fitness center, highly regarded early childhood school and senior center, arts and cultural events offered throughout the year, and classes for every age, the JCC connects, enriches, and inspires over 27,000 visitors per month. The JCC welcomes and engages everyone, regardless of race, religion, or ability.
ABOUT THE CLASS
This six-week program gives students ages 10 - 17 the opportunity to learn the behind-the-scenes aspects of running a show!
Students will work with the set designer to build, paint, and design all the aspects of our fall production of Aristophanes' 'The Birds.' After construction is complete, students will have the opportunity to assist in technical rehearsals with prop management, costume support, opening and closing the curtain, and moving set pieces for scene changes.
POSITION SUMMARY
Working closely with the director and other members of our show's creative team, the Set Design Instructor will coordinate and oversee the artistic design and construction of the set for Aristophanes 'The Birds."
The instructor will supervise and instruct a small student crew in both artistic and practical design, as well as ensuring safe practices. Construction will primarily consist of repainting existing sets/flats and building new pieces out of foamcore, cardboard, and lauan. This is not a carpentry course, and students are not permitted to operate power tools.
After construction is complete, the Set Design Instructor will serve as an Assistant Stage Manager helping oversee the behind-the-scenes management of sets and props during dress rehearsals and performances.
Classes begin on Monday, October 5 and run every Tuesday and Thursday thereafter from 5:30 - 7pm. Additional rehearsals begin November 2, with performances on November 12 and 15. There are no Friday or Saturday rehearsals. Instructor will be required to attend a pre-production meeting with the director and thereafter submit a design proposal and construction schedule/lesson plan for the six weeks of class.
CANDIDATES SHOULD HAVE THE FOLLOWING SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:
  • Comfortable working with children ages 10 - 17
  • Experience in theatre.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills
  • Experience in artistic design or set design
  • Prior teaching experience
