What is a part time taxi driver?

Part time taxi drivers are individuals who operate taxis on a flexible or reduced schedule, rather than working full-time hours. They transport passengers to various destinations, often working nights, weekends, or during peak times when demand is higher. This role allows for flexibility, making it suitable for people seeking supplementary income or work that fits around other commitments. Part time taxi drivers are usually required to have a valid driver's license, a clean driving record, and in many places, a special taxi or chauffeur’s license.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a part time taxi driver?

To thrive as a Part Time Taxi Driver, you need a valid driver's license, a clean driving record, and strong knowledge of local routes and traffic regulations. Familiarity with GPS navigation systems, ride-hailing apps, and digital payment platforms is typically required. Excellent customer service, communication skills, and reliability set standout drivers apart. These skills and qualities ensure passenger safety, efficient service, and positive customer experiences, which are crucial for repeat business and professional reputation.

What are the most common scheduling challenges faced by part time taxi drivers and how can they be managed?

Part-time taxi drivers often face challenges in securing consistent shifts and maximizing earnings during preferred hours, especially during high-demand periods like weekends or holidays. Many drivers manage this by leveraging app-based dispatch systems, staying flexible with their availability, and communicating regularly with dispatchers or ride-hailing platforms. Building a routine and understanding local peak times can help optimize both workload and income, while networking with other drivers may provide valuable tips for navigating busy or slow periods.

Job description

Why this role is exciting

Join the cutting edge of mobility tech as a Remote Driver at Vay, where you'll be helping to redefine how people move through cities. This is your opportunity to be part of one of the most exciting and innovative autonomous driving projects in the world, right from the ground floor. Based out of our Las Vegas office (in-person, not remote), you'll help launch and shape the future of remote vehicle operation while working with a passionate and forward-thinking team. Plus, with a starting rate of $18/hr with growth to earn up to $25/hr & safety bonuses after training, it's a rewarding role in more ways than one.

Please note: This is an ongoing talent pool role. We review applications in batches based on operational needs, so responses may not be immediate.

Training & Scheduling Flexibility

We want to make training accessible to candidates with different schedules. While we ask that candidates are available for up to 40 hours per week during their first 3 weeks of training, we can accommodate part-time availability.

If you're unable to commit to 40 hours per week, training can be completed in 4-6 hour blocks within the following windows:

  • 6:00 AM-3:00 PM
  • 2:30 PM-11:00 PM

Not being available for 40 hours per week during training will not prevent you from being considered for the role. We'll work with you to build a training schedule around your availability.

Shifts & Scheduling

Following training, the role is scheduled 5 days over a 7-day period, with shifts generally structured as 4-6 hour blocks starting anytime between 12:00 PM and 4:00 PM.

There is also the possibility of overnight shifts, with coverage potentially scheduled between 11:00 PM and 5:00 AM.

What you'll be driving
  • Remotely operate vehicles from a driving station to customers or within the local service area
  • Act as a Safety or Teledriver for vehicle testing, following set protocols
  • Deliver exceptional customer service in interactions with Vay users
  • Support engineering teams with data collection, feedback, and test reports
  • Pitch in with fleet and administrative tasks to ensure smooth operations and great user experiences
What are we looking for
  • A safe and responsible driver with a clean US license and at least 2 years of professional driving experience (Uber, Lyft, taxi, etc.)
  • Able to pass a drug test, including THC
  • Tech-savvy: ideally with gaming experience or high comfort with digital interfaces
  • Organized, detail-oriented, and calm under pressure with a troubleshooting mindset
  • Passionate about the future of autonomous vehicles and urban mobility
