Position Overview

Think Tank Inc. is seeking part-time Commercial Dockside Samplers to work within the SEFSC Fisheries Statistics Division's Catch Validation and Biosampling Branch. These positions perform the same core duties as the full-time Dockside Sampler on a part-time basis. Exact hours per week are to be confirmed with the hiring manager.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collect lengths, weights, and biological samples (primarily otoliths) from commercial fisheries catches targeting 1% of total catch year weight.
  • Enter data into TIPS or SRHS web portals by the last day of the subsequent month of collection.
  • Prepare and ship biological samples within one week of collection; ship by 30th of month after proofing. Gulf/mackerel samples to Panama City Lab; South Atlantic (excl. mackerels) to Beaufort Lab.
  • Run monthly QA/QC audits and complete monthly data proofing.
  • Submit HARs and vessel eLog reviews weekly by Friday if participating in SRHS.
  • Assist FTE staff with training sessions; participate in outreach events and training conferences.
  • Complete training courses and maintain up-to-date training annually

Minimum Qualifications (Required)

Education

  • MS Degree in Marine Science or a related field of study; OR BS Degree plus three (3) years of relevant experience.

Skills

  • Knowledge of fish/related biological field sufficient to independently perform scientific tasks.
  • Proficient in the use of fish, invertebrate, and protected species identification books and keys.
  • Computer literate; experienced with word processing, database, statistical, and graphics programs.

Preferred Qualifications (Desired)

  • Experience collecting catch and effort information from fishers.
  • Knowledge of biological sampling (lengths, age structures, gonads) from marine fish.
