The Medical Assistant Student provides care & support to patients under the direction of the physician or mid-level provider.

Responsibilities of this position include:

  • Rooms patients and guides them through the initial steps of the visit, including reviewing health histories, collecting vital signs, and accurately documenting clinical data. Adheres to all requirements of Meaningful Use and The Joint Commission. Addresses preventative maintenance issues as related to neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients. Contributes to the coordination of orderly and efficient patient flow.
  • Obtains, reviews, and summarizes patient clinical information to ensure providers have accurate and timely data for care planning.
  • Conducts nurse visits to monitor and record patients' blood pressure, ensuring documentation and timely communication to the care team.
  • Conducts additional scheduled visits in alignment with demonstrated skills and competencies.
  • Follows proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) usage including donning and doffing.
  • Possesses a working knowledge of all medical procedures, exams, and specialized equipment utilized within the clinic, as it related to the clinic’s specialty. Utilizes protective devices, as needed, to maintain integrity of medical treatments. Recognizes significant values, communicates results to the provider, notifies the patient, as appropriate, and arranges follow up activities and procedures. Adheres to Universal Protocol procedures.
  • Accesses & reviews Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMP) data for controlled substances as a designated provider delegate, helping ensure patient safety, regulatory compliance, and informed clinical decision-making.
  • Reviews patient medication histories and submits refill proposals to the assigned provider for approval in accordance with established protocols.
  • Performs laboratory testing covered by CLIA, prepares specimens for transport, and complies with all quality measures.
  • Processes and communicates provider orders to external facilities (i.e. pharmacies, clinics, hospitals, nursing homes, etc.). Facilitates the timely and accurate completion of medical forms (i.e. RTW, school forms, DOT, worker's compensation, surgical consent, etc.).
  • Answers telephone calls, screens calls, takes and delivers messages within EHR according to individual clinic practices.
  • Assists with appointment scheduling including office visits, referrals, diagnostic testing, therapy appointments, and surgery. Collaborates with the pre-authorization department and insurance companies to initiate referrals and obtain approvals, pre-certifications, and prior authorizations for medical care and treatment.
  • Communicates normal test results to patients as directed by the provider, ensuring clarity, accuracy, and adherence to established protocols.
  • Keeps all patient care areas cleaned and stocked with appropriate levels of medical supplies to enhance patient care and efficiency. Appropriately maintains, cleans, decontaminates, and sterilizes patient care equipment and initiates requests for repairs (or replacements) as necessary.
  • Conducts proper biohazard waste disposal and follows components of the Bloodborne Pathogen Exposure Control Plan. Follows the Fort HealthCare decontamination and sterilization policy as appropriate to the specific clinic and equipment needs.
  • Conducts electrocardiogram (EKG) tests to capture accurate heart activity readings for diagnostic evaluation.
