GEOG 2P03 - Cities in a Globalizing World

Compensation

Teaching Assistant, Course Coordinator and Lab Demonstrator positions are paid according to the qualifications that the employee holds.

Employees who do NOT hold a 4-year honours degree or a 3-year pass degree will be paid the undergraduate rate - $23.30 per hour.(Rate effective September 1, 2026)

Employees who hold a 4-year honours degree or a 3-year pass degree will be paid the graduate rate - $36.67 per hour.(Rate effective September 1, 2026)

In cases where additional duties are required as part of a Teaching Assistant's duties, these hours shall be compensated at the appropriate Teaching Assistant rate.

Duties

The duties and responsibilities of the Teaching Assistant shall be in accordance with Article 22 of the CUPE Local 4207, Unit 1, Collective Agreement. These are made up of scheduled contact time with students and non-classroom time (including preparation of seminar material, student consultation, marking or grading, examination proctoring, attending lectures, holding office hours, and other course administration as may be required.

Qualifications

The qualifications for this position have changed since it was last posted .

a) Must be enrolled in or have completed a postgraduate degree or have completedaHonours Degree in Human Geography or equivalent*.

If vacanciesremain, students enrolled in an Honours Program (completed 13 or more credits) in Human Geography or equivalent* will be considered.

b) Completion of 4 full credits in Human Geography with an overall average of 75% or higher in all Human Geography courses completed isrequired(or equivalent*).

c) Completion of the course for which the applicant wishes to be a teaching assistant with a final grade of 75% or higher in that course (or equivalent*).

d) Demonstrated successful undergraduate teaching experience or equivalent small group leadership in an undergraduate context.

e) Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

f) Familiarity with two sets of software: [1] MS-Excel or similar spreadsheet software, especially to calculate descriptive spatial statistics and clean Statistics Canada data; [2] QGIS, ArcGIS, or similar geomatics software to map Canadian census data and calculations generated from Canadian census data.

f) Ability to prioritize work and meet stipulated deadlines.


*Equivalency will be determined by the course instructor, in consultation with the selection committee. Applicants must make a case that their qualifications are equivalent to those required above.

As per Article 22.04 of the Collective Agreement:

  • Graduate Students enrolled at Brock University shall not accept an appointment in excess of an average of ten (10) hours per week over an academic term, in which she is enrolled as a full-time student, without the prior permission of the Dean of Graduate Studies;
  • Undergraduate Students enrolled at Brock University shall not accept more than nine (9) Teaching Assistant appointments, or the equivalent of nine (9) Teaching Assistant appointments in any classification, per term minus the number of courses in which that student is currently enrolled;
  • Part-time Graduate Students and Non-Students shall not accept any appointment which, taken together with all other appointments at the University, would cause the member to exceed the maximum number of regular hours (i.e. not overtime hours) allowable in a work week under the Employment Standards Act, as amended from time to time.

Permission to exceed the above-mentioned workload limits should be obtained prior to application.
