Job description

The position is located at a Department of Veterans Affairs VHA Medical Center Las Vegas, Nevada, and serves as a Recreation Assistant working to implement the objectives of the Integrative Health Coordinating Center and the VHA Office of Patient-Centered Care and Cultural Transformation. The position is responsible for providing yoga instruction for the purpose of promoting, restoring, and preserving health and well-being of Veterans, and supporting additional recreational activities.Qualifications:To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 08/17/2026.
Creditable Experience:
GS-06 level: successfully graduated from an RYS 200-hour training and taught at least 1,000 hours over a minimum of 2 years. Holds a Experienced Registered Yoga Teacher (E-RYT) 200 or an E-RYT 500.
You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below:
  • Individual Occupational Requirement: GS-05 level: successfully graduated from an RYS 200-hour training. Examples of experience would typically include, but are not limited to: group leader, counselor, or similar work in public and private recreation programs for adults or children such as summer camps, local playgrounds, YWCA and YMCA clubs, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, urban community centers, or resort recreational activities; teacher's aid in elementary school recreation or physical education program, with emphasis on development of general recreational skills and abilities; aid or assistant assignments in recreation while on active military service; aid or assistant in the organization and administration of recreation activities, such as preparing activities calendars, maintaining attendance records, and providing information concerning schedules and activities; summer aid in a State or national park, with duties related to the recreational activities of visitors to campsites, trails, picnic areas, nature and raft centers, and boating and fishing areas (e.g., demonstrating camping techniques and park safety, conducting nature tours, and overseeing farm animal areas provided for children); sales or stock clerk in a recreation supplies and equipment shop; aid or assistant in the issuance of authorized property, and in the maintenance of inventory control and accountability for such property in a recreation facility or aid or assistant in a hotel or resort recreation service, with duties such as setting up areas for games, tournaments, and other organized group recreational activities.
  • Specialized Experience: Demonstrates knowledge of general exercise programs and exercise equipment and safety factors in demonstrating and observing use of exercise equipment. When working one-on-one with Veterans, the yoga instructor determines their degree of interaction with activities what action may be needed to enhance their participation.
  • Preferred Experience- eRYT-500 with trauma informed training and experience and knowledge of chair yoga and other
    adaptive yoga practices for disabilities. Experience charting on patients or clients, marketing classes and ordering and managing supplies.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.
Physical Requirements: The work requires considerable physical exertion in order to perform the assigned duties. The environment involves everyday risks or discomforts that require normal safety precautions typical of and office or training room setting. The work area is adequately lighted, heated, and ventilated. Light lifting (under 15 pounds); light carrying (under 15 pounds); use of fingers; both hands required; walking (4 hours); standing (4 hours); repeated bending (2 hours); both legs required; near vision correctable to 13" to 16" to Jaeger 1 to 4; far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and to 20/40 in the other; ability to distinguish basic colors; ability to distinguish shades of colors and hearing (aid may be permitted); working outside.
