What is a part time SQL developer?

A Part Time SQL Developer is a professional who designs, develops, and maintains databases using SQL (Structured Query Language) while working less than full-time hours, often on a flexible or project basis. Their primary duties include writing SQL queries, optimizing database performance, and supporting data-related needs for organizations. Part-time roles are ideal for those seeking work-life balance or supplementing their income, while still contributing valuable technical skills. These positions may be remote or on-site, depending on the employer.

What does a part time SQL developer do?

Standard Query Language (SQL) is a computer language for communicating with databases. As a part-time SQL developer, you help design databases using SQL code. Your duties may also include creating applications that help users interface with databases. After you develop a database or related tools, your responsibilities shift to testing your code to ensure quality and usability. As a part-time developer, you may design and test one data application or one facet of a larger database development project. Since you work part-time, you need to document your work and adhere to the development methodologies that your team is using.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a part time SQL developer?

To thrive as a Part Time SQL Developer, you need a solid understanding of SQL, relational databases, and experience with database design and optimization, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with tools like Microsoft SQL Server, MySQL, or Oracle, and certifications such as Microsoft Certified: Azure Data Fundamentals, are commonly required. Strong analytical thinking, time management, and effective communication help you manage tasks independently and collaborate with stakeholders. These skills ensure the efficient development and maintenance of reliable databases, which are crucial for accurate data-driven decision-making.

How does working as a part time SQL developer typically impact collaboration with full time team members?

As a part-time SQL Developer, you’ll often coordinate closely with full-time developers, database administrators, and project managers to ensure your work aligns with ongoing projects. Effective communication is crucial, as you may need to attend key meetings or use collaboration tools to stay updated on project progress and requirements. Flexibility and proactive status updates help bridge any gaps caused by your limited hours, ensuring smooth workflow and successful project delivery.

This role sits at the intersection of Business, Technology, and External Clients, focusing on the end-to-end technical onboarding of clients to trade global markets via the FIX Protocol.

You will be responsible for the full lifecycle of client integration-from initial requirement gathering and network connectivity setup to certification testing and production go-live. Additionally, the role involves providing expert-level connectivity support across FIX platforms and managing client-specific customizations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Client Integration: Lead the technical onboarding process for a diverse range of clients (including Quant, Institutional, and Hedge Funds) across DMA, high-touch, program trading, and Algorithmic Trading platforms.
  • Technical Certification: Conduct FIX certification testing to ensure client systems adhere to firm-specific specifications and exchange requirements.
  • Connectivity Management: Coordinate the setup and troubleshooting of network paths, firewalls, VPNs, and dedicated lines.
  • Stakeholder Collaboration: Act as the primary technical point of contact for Sales, Trading Desks, and external vendor technology teams.
  • Support & Maintenance: Provide Level 2 support for client connectivity platform issues, performing deep-dive analysis of FIX engine system logs and network captures to resolve production hurdles.
  • Engineering & Automation: Identify opportunities to enhance the onboarding experience by developing or improving internal tools, scripts, and automated testing frameworks.
  • Change Management: Manage the deployment of client-specific configurations and rules within a distributed, high-availability environment.

Basic Qualifications

  • FIX Expertise: Deep understanding of the FIX Protocol and electronic trading workflows (e.g., DMA, Algorithmic Trading, and IOIs).
  • Technical Proficiency: Strong experience in UNIX/Linux environments and proficiency in SQL and APIs for data analysis and troubleshooting.
  • Networking Knowledge: Solid understanding of network infrastructure, including TCP/IP, firewalls, and connectivity troubleshooting tools.
  • Communication: Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to translate complex technical concepts for non-technical business stakeholders.
  • Problem Solving: Strong analytical skills with a "client-first" mentality and the ability to work effectively under pressure.
  • Project Management: Proven ability to manage multiple concurrent onboarding projects in a fast-paced, front-office environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Scripting & Programming: Experience in Python, Perl, or Shell scripting to automate manual tasks.
  • Market Knowledge: Familiarity with global equities markets, including market structure and regulatory requirements.
  • DevOps Tools: Experience with software version control systems (e.g., Git) and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field.
