What is a Part Time Software Developer Internship?

A Part Time Software Developer Internship is a temporary position where students or aspiring developers work part-time hours, typically while attending school or managing other commitments. Interns gain practical experience by assisting with software development projects, writing code, and collaborating with experienced developers. These internships often last a few months and provide valuable hands-on learning, mentorship, and exposure to real-world programming environments.

What kind of projects and responsibilities can I expect during a part-time software developer internship?

As a part-time software developer intern, you will typically work on real-world projects that support the team’s ongoing development efforts, such as debugging code, writing unit tests, or building new features under supervision. Interns are often given tasks that match their current skill level but also provide opportunities for growth, including exposure to code reviews and participation in agile meetings. You’ll likely collaborate closely with full-time developers and may be assigned a mentor to guide your progress. The work environment is usually supportive, encouraging interns to ask questions and contribute ideas while balancing learning with meaningful contributions.

Job description

The Aerospace Corporation is the trusted partner to the nation's space programs, solving the hardest problems and providing unmatched technical expertise. As the operator of a federally funded research and development center (FFRDC), we are broadly engaged across all aspects of space- delivering innovative solutions that span satellite, launch, ground, and cyber systems for defense, civil and commercial customers. When you join our team, you'll be part of a special collection of problem solvers, thought leaders, and innovators. Join us and take your place in space.

The Defense Systems Group (DSG) provides analysis-based decision support to senior leaders on space architecture, policy and strategy, technology development, warfighter capability enablers, systems integration, defense industrial base, and threat reduction to help shape existing and future space missions across the national security space (NSS) enterprise. DSG is unique at Aerospace as it not only directly supports major customers, including the U.S. Space Force, U.S. Space Command, Air Force Materiel Command, and senior leadership at the Pentagon, but also provides a broad range of technical support across the national space enterprise, maintaining vertical responsibilities with customers' portfolios as well as horizontal, matrixed responsibilities across the corporation. Additionally, DSG provides deep technical expertise to the Space Force Space Systems Command (SSC) in the conception, design, acquisition, launch and operations of satellite, launch vehicle, ground control, and range systems.

Join a team of technical analysts in the International Launch Systems office as a Software Systems Engineer to support missile warning, missile defense and other programs. As part of the team, you will identify and solve hard software problems in tools that impact current and future customer missions. You will work closely with technical analysts to understand customer needs and work independently to develop software solutions.

The selected candidate will be required to work part-time (up to an average of 20 hours per week), on-site at our facility in El Segundo, California. This is a part-time casual position with limited hours.

What You'll Be Doing

  • Work with in-house technical engineers to maintain and develop critical software.

  • Advanced degree in software engineering [applicable STEM areas or other discipline]
