Part Time Software Developer Contract information

How do part-time software developer contractors typically manage communication and collaboration with full-time teams?

Part-time software developer contractors often coordinate with full-time teams using project management tools like Jira, Slack, or Trello to stay updated on project progress and priorities. Regular check-ins, whether through stand-up meetings or scheduled updates, help ensure alignment on tasks and deadlines. It's important for part-time contractors to proactively communicate their availability, ask clarifying questions early, and document their work clearly so that full-time team members can easily pick up where they left off. Successful contractors also make an effort to integrate with the team's workflow and culture, which can help overcome challenges related to differing schedules.

What is a Part Time Software Developer Contract?

A Part Time Software Developer Contract is a work arrangement where a software developer is hired to work on specific projects or tasks for a company for a set number of hours per week, rather than as a full-time employee. The contract typically outlines the scope of work, payment terms, and duration of the engagement. Part-time contracts offer flexibility for both the employer and the developer, allowing the developer to balance multiple projects or other commitments. This type of role is common for startups, small businesses, or companies with fluctuating workloads that do not require a full-time developer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Part Time Software Developer Contractor, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Part Time Software Developer Contractor, you need strong programming skills, experience in software development life cycles, and a relevant degree or proven portfolio. Familiarity with development tools such as Git, integrated development environments (IDEs), and popular programming languages (e.g., Python, JavaScript) is typically required. Excellent time management, communication, and problem-solving abilities are vital soft skills to successfully collaborate remotely and deliver quality work on schedule. These skills ensure you can efficiently contribute to projects, meet client expectations, and maintain productivity in a flexible work environment.

Job Description:

The Applications team within Software Engineering builds the internal tools that power Shield AI’s most critical operations across Production, Fleet Sustainment, Customer Operations, Supply Chain, and Engineering. Our portfolio includes software supporting supply chain management, fleet sustainment, and aircraft manufacturing.

We are growing rapidly and are seeking a Full-Stack Software Engineer to help design, develop, and deploy robust applications that directly enable manufacturing, operational planning, and mission execution within a Foundry-integrated ecosystem.

If you thrive in fast-paced environments, enjoy solving complex problems with modern technologies, and want to see your work make an immediate impact, this role is for you.

What you'll do:
  • Develop and release Foundry-backed applications that support MES, ERP, and operational analytics platforms.
  • Build end-to-end features, from backend services and data transformations to intuitive user interfaces, with a focus on performance, maintainability, and security.
  • Partner closely with production managers, engineers, and supply chain teams to understand business workflows and deliver scalable software solutions.
  • Design and build applications with React and TypeScript within the Palantir Foundry ecosystem, integrating and operationalizing data across multiple domains.
  • Deliver continuously by writing well-tested, maintainable code and iterating quickly based on real-world feedback.
  • Influence technical direction by contributing to architecture decisions, establishing best practices, and helping scale Shield AI’s Foundry development capabilities.
Required qualifications:
  • 5+ years of experience in full-stack software development with demonstrated ownership of production applications.
  • Exceptional ability to communicate with stakeholders, spanning senior leadership and collaborative peers to align on requirements and outcomes.
  • Hands-on experience designing and building React applications and TypeScript/JavaScript-based backend services and APIs.
  • Strong experience with data modeling, large-scale datasets, and analytical workflows.
  • Solid foundation in software architecture, testing, code quality, and technical documentation.
  • Proven ability to independently deliver complex projects while collaborating effectively across cross-functional teams.
  • Ability to obtain a S//SAR level security clearance desired.
Preferred qualifications:
  • Experience with Palantir Foundry, including Ontology, data pipelines, APIs, and application development, or comparable large-scale data platforms.
  • Hands-on experience designing, building, and operating Python-based data processing pipelines.
  • Aerospace industry familiarity, with experience developing software for manufacturing, supply chain operations, fleet sustainment, or aircraft maintenance.
  • Familiarity with modern software delivery practices, including version control, automated testing, CI/CD, and infrastructure automation.
