Position: Part-Time Contract Staff Accountant - Graduate Student Opportunity

Responsible to: Accounting Manager

Location: Indianapolis, IN (Hybrid)

Schedule: Part-time, 20-25 hours per week

Compensation: $35 per hour

Duration: 3-month contract, with the potential to apply for a full-time role when one becomes 

available.

This part-time, 3-month contract position is a great fit for graduate students seeking hands-on 

nonprofit accounting experience. It offers flexible, part-time hours designed to work around a 

class schedule, direct exposure to nonprofit fund accounting and financial operations, and the 

potential to apply for a full-time role with Girls Inc. when one becomes available.


Departmental Role: The Staff Accountant is responsible for supporting the Girls Inc. Network 

accounting operations by maintaining financial records, preparing journal entries, and reconciling 

accounts, and assisting with financial reporting. This role works closely with the accounting team 

to ensure accurate and timely financial information while maintaining Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and company policies.


Position Summary:

Responsibilities:

  • Prepare and post daily, weekly, and monthly journal entries.
  • Perform month-end, quarter-end, and year-end closing activities.
  • Reconcile general ledger accounts, bank accounts, and balance sheet accounts.
  • Maintain and analyze financial records for accuracy and completeness.
  • Prepare account reconciliations and investigate discrepancies.
  • Assist in preparing monthly financial statements and management reports.
  • Process fixed asset additions, disposals, and depreciation.
  • Support accounts payable and accounts receivable functions as needed.
  • Assist with budgeting and forecasting activities.
  • Process payroll.
  • Prepare information for regulatory reports (i.e., 990), when applicable.
  • Assist with external audits by providing requested documentation.
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP, internal controls, and company accounting policies. Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes and internal controls.
  • Maintain confidentiality of financial information.
  • Perform other accounting and finance duties as assigned.
  • Proficiency in the use of information technology - Windows Office environment (i.e., Word, Excel, PowerPoint). Experience with Sage Intacct or similar accounting systems is a plus.

Requirements

Job Qualifications and Skills: 

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or a related field. 1-3 years of accounting experience.
  • Strong understanding of GAAP.
  • Experience with ERP or accounting software (e.g., Sage Intacct, Microsoft Dynamics, Oracle, QuickBooks).
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Effective written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Nonprofit fund accounting experience preferred.
  • Experience with financial grant accounting.
  • Experience with financial reporting and audits.
  • Knowledge of internal controls and compliance requirements.
