Job description

Understood is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting neurodivergent people in the United States, such as those with ADHD and dyslexia.

Understood's Content Studio is looking for several video producers with experience creating content for YouTube and social platforms. We're hiring across four content types, and you should have experience in at least one:

  • Evergreen explainers: short-form social and/or YouTube long-form
  • News content: short-form social and/or YouTube long-form
  • YouTube and video podcasts
  • YouTube livestreams

To apply for this role, please send your resume, cover letter, and 2-3 writing or script samples to podcast@understood.org. Applications submitted through other channels will not be reviewed.

What you'll do

All producers

  • Write video scripts for multiple formats: short-form scripts (TikTok, Instagram, YouTube Shorts) optimized for fast hooks and retention, and longer-form YouTube scripts with more narrative depth
  • Contribute to editorial vetting and fact-checking: review scripts, story pitches, and published content for accuracy before they go out the door
  • Coordinate production timelines and deliverables to ensure on-time completion of assigned episodes and videos, including coordinating with the video team as needed
  • Track project milestones and provide regular status updates to relevant Understood contacts, ensuring adherence to agreed timelines
  • Quality-check published episodes and videos, and promptly report any issues or errors for correction
  • Support show marketing by cutting ads and short-form promotional content as requested
  • Participate in periodic project planning meetings to align on assigned deliverables
  • Build and manage episodes in our production tracking software, monitoring subtasks and deadlines and flagging delays as needed

Podcast producers, in addition to the above

  • Provide creative and technical support across assigned episodes, including research, scripting, editing, engineering recording sessions, sound design, requesting remote kits, mixing, and implementing feedback, in line with Understood's editorial guidelines
What you bring

All producers

  • 3-4+ years of producing experience in one or more of the formats listed above

News producers

  • Experience in science or health journalism, with a demonstrated ability to work under journalistic standards
  • Comfort reading peer-reviewed studies beyond the abstract, with an eye for overstated claims, correlation-versus-causation errors, and industry-funded spin

Podcast producers

  • Hands-on experience with audio production: recording and engineering sessions, editing, sound design, and mixing to a professional standard
  • Experience prepping hosts and guests for interviews, including writing scripts, questions, and background research
  • Ability to manage multiple production timelines and deliver final audio files, host and guest prep materials, and marketing assets to spec and on deadline
