What are some common challenges faced by part-time scribes, and how can they be managed?

Part-time scribes often face the challenge of quickly adapting to different healthcare providers' documentation styles and fast-paced clinical environments. Balancing accuracy and efficiency in medical note-taking, while managing varying shift schedules, can also be demanding. To manage these challenges, it's helpful to develop strong listening skills, familiarize yourself with common medical terminology, and maintain open communication with supervising physicians. Many scribes find that regularly reviewing documentation guidelines and seeking feedback helps them improve over time.

What are part time scribes?

Part time scribes are individuals who work on a part-time basis to assist healthcare providers by documenting patient encounters in real-time during medical visits. They typically enter information into electronic health records (EHRs), manage documentation, and help streamline workflow so that providers can focus more on patient care. Part time scribes may work in settings like hospitals, clinics, or private practices, and their schedules are usually flexible to accommodate other commitments such as school or another job.

What is the difference between Part Time Scribe vs Medical Transcriptionist?

During the program's lifetime ECC has helped start numerous scribe programs throughout the Midwest. We aim to provide our scribes with the richest opportunity to explore the different areas of medicine before they attend any health professional school. As a scribe with ECC, you will have the ability to work side-by-side with physicians, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners, as well as numerous other medical staff. You will learn how to document a chart, master medical terminology, learn how to read lab values and radiology imaging, watch numerous patient encounters, and so much more. We also provide opportunities outside of scribing including education sessions, practice interviews, volunteer and leadership opportunities, and social events.
Additional Information
Part-Time: ECC's part-time scribe position is designed for the students who are still in undergrad and looking to gain exposure into the medical field. Part-time commitment is two years and will work a minimum of 8 shifts per month (2-3 shifts/week).
Unfortunately, we do not hire for summer only positions.
Shift Description: Most shifts last an average of 8-9 hours each with a balance of days, evenings, nights and weekends. The schedule is flexible! Many of our scribes are currently in school, studying for the MCAT, or applying to school while working for ECC. ECC takes pride in making sure students academics are not conflicting with the schedule. Students are never scheduled to work during class time or exams.
We consider candidates on a rolling basis-- we do not wait until a position expires to begin reviewing candidates' application materials. We recommend applying early as we are very flexible with our starting dates and commonly hire 1-3+ months out.
Education
This position is reserved for those working towards a career in the pre-health track. Sophomore in college or higher preferred.
Qualifications
No medical experience is required! 1:1 training, paid training provided.
A Scribe must be able to work in a team-based environment under stressful conditions, have an upbeat attitude at all times, a willingness to be challenged, a hunger to achieve, and the ability to work well with others. You will encounter patients from all walks of life here, and a non-judgmental attitude is essential.
Must be a minimum of 18 years of age with a HS Diploma.
GPA of 3.0 or higher, computer proficiency (typing speed >60 wpm), and knowledge of medical terminology strongly preferred.
