Part Time Scribe information

What is a part time scribe?

Part time scribes are individuals who work on a part-time basis to assist healthcare providers by documenting patient encounters in real-time during medical visits. They typically enter information into electronic health records (EHRs), manage documentation, and help streamline workflow so that providers can focus more on patient care. Part time scribes may work in settings like hospitals, clinics, or private practices, and their schedules are usually flexible to accommodate other commitments such as school or another job.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a part time scribe, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Part Time Scribe, you need strong attention to detail, fast and accurate typing skills, and a basic understanding of medical terminology, often supported by a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) systems and dictation software is typically required. Excellent listening skills, discretion, and the ability to multitask under pressure set standout candidates apart. These skills ensure precise and efficient documentation, supporting healthcare providers and enhancing patient care quality.

What are some common challenges faced by part time scribes, and how can they be managed?

Part-time scribes often face the challenge of quickly adapting to different healthcare providers' documentation styles and fast-paced clinical environments. Balancing accuracy and efficiency in medical note-taking, while managing varying shift schedules, can also be demanding. To manage these challenges, it's helpful to develop strong listening skills, familiarize yourself with common medical terminology, and maintain open communication with supervising physicians. Many scribes find that regularly reviewing documentation guidelines and seeking feedback helps them improve over time.

What is the difference between Part Time Scribe vs Medical Transcriptionist?

AspectPart Time ScribeMedical Transcriptionist
CredentialsBasic medical terminology knowledge, sometimes certificationMedical transcription certification often preferred
Work EnvironmentHospitals, clinics, outpatient facilitiesHome-based, medical offices, transcription companies
Job TasksReal-time documentation during patient visitsTranscribing recorded doctor notes into written reports
Industry UsageCommon in healthcare settings for immediate documentationUsed for creating accurate medical records from recordings

While both roles involve medical documentation, Part Time Scribes work directly with healthcare providers during patient visits, requiring real-time note-taking. Medical Transcriptionists typically transcribe recorded audio files into written reports, often working remotely. Understanding these differences helps job seekers choose the role that best fits their skills and career goals.

How much do part-time medical scribes make?

Part-time medical scribes typically earn between $10 and $15 per hour, depending on experience, location, and the healthcare setting. Some positions may offer higher pay for specialized skills or certifications, and schedules often include evening or weekend shifts.

How to be a part time scribe with no experience?

To become a part-time scribe with no experience, focus on developing strong typing and listening skills, and familiarize yourself with medical terminology and documentation software. Some employers offer on-the-job training, so demonstrating reliability and a willingness to learn can improve your chances of being hired. Certifications in medical transcription or related areas can also enhance your prospects.

Is it hard to get hired as a part time scribe?

Getting hired as a part-time scribe typically depends on relevant skills such as medical terminology, transcription accuracy, and familiarity with electronic health records. Employers often look for prior experience or training, but the position can be accessible to those with strong attention to detail and good communication skills. Competition varies by location and employer requirements.

Job description

Clinical Aide | Gilman, IL | Part-Time Weekends | Saturday – Sunday, 12:00 PM – 8:30 PM |$20 – $22/hr

Banyan Treatment Centers is seeking a compassionate and dedicated Clinical Aide to join our team in Gilman, IL. Across central Illinois, the need for accessible, compassionate behavioral health care continues to grow — and this role puts you at the center of that work, sitting at the intersection of clinical care and daily operations.

This is a meaningful role for someone who understands the recovery journey — through professional experience, personal experience, or both — and wants to be a consistent, trusted presence for people working hard to change their lives.

About Banyan Treatment Centers

Banyan Treatment Centers is a leading national provider of intensive treatment for individuals facing substance use and mental health disorders. Backed by TPG’s Rise Fund, Banyan is rapidly expanding access to high-quality, compassionate care.

Why Join Our Team?

  • A unique position with real range — this role bridges clinical support and program operations, giving you meaningful exposure to both sides of treatment and the flexibility to grow in either direction.
  • Mission-driven work at a Joint Commission–accredited organization with the stability, resources, and reach of a national provider — right in your own community.
  • Direct impact — you'll help keep clients engaged in treatment during a critical window, reducing early discharges and supporting each person's path to recovery.
  • Two directions for growth — whether you're drawn toward clinical work, therapy, and patient care, or toward program leadership and operations, this role builds skills and visibility in both.
  • Lived experience valued — personal familiarity with recovery is genuinely respected and welcomed on our team.
  • Collaborative environment — work alongside therapists, medical staff, and operations team members committed to trauma-informed care across both SUD and mental health tracks.

Key Responsibilities

  • Foster a positive, therapeutic environment by engaging with clients, reinforcing program expectations, and modeling healthy behaviors
  • Provide non-clinical support to clients in distress and connect them quickly with licensed therapists as needed
  • Keep clients on track with encouragement, schedule reminders, and logistical support
  • Co-facilitate psychoeducational and support groups alongside licensed clinicians
  • Act as a communication link between therapists, the clinical team, and outside providers
  • Shadow clinical staff to deepen understanding of therapeutic approaches and program structure
  • Assist Primary Therapists with scribing during sessions and help maintain client documentation under supervision
  • Prepare session materials and organize client case files
  • Enter non-clinical data into the electronic health record (EHR) system
  • Support general administrative tasks including scanning, uploading, and filing documents

Qualifications

Required:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Strong understanding of professional boundaries in a therapeutic environment
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to stay calm and supportive in a fast-paced setting
  • Comfortable working as part of a multidisciplinary team

Preferred:

  • Bachelor's degree in Social Work or a related field
  • One or more years of experience in substance use or mental health treatment settings
  • Experience working with clients at detox and/or residential levels of care
  • CAP, CADC, or another addiction-related certification
  • Lived experience with recovery is highly valued
