BACKGROUND

Carmen Schools of Science & Technology (Carmen) is a charter school network in Milwaukee, WI with a mission to graduate all students as critical thinkers and self-directed learners prepared for success in college, meaningful careers, community involvement, and family life. The Carmen Schools network includes five schools with 1,900 students in grades 6th12th.

POSITION SUMMARY

Carmen Schools of Science & Technology is seeking a Part-Time Cafeteria Support Staff member to support the daily operations of the food service program. Cafeteria Support Staff assist in the daily operation of the school nutrition program by preparing and serving meals, maintaining food safety standards, supporting inventory management, and ensuring a clean and welcoming cafeteria environment for students and staff.

QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES

    1. A level of education necessary for reading and following written food menus and work schedules.
    2. Basic ability to read and speak/understand English.
    3. General knowledge of materials and methods used in preparing and serving meats, breads, vegetables and other foods on a large scale.
    4. General knowledge of the use or care of food preparation equipment
    5. Skill in the use of standardized and specialized kitchen utensils and equipment
    6. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, students and school staff.
    7. Ability to maintain emotional control.
    8. Ability to work with others in a close fast paced environment.
    9. Ability to address students, staff, and visitors in a pleasant, courteous manner.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Food Preparation and Service

  • Prepare food items according to written and verbal instructions.
  • Serve breakfast and lunch items to students and staff.
  • Replenish food items and maintain organized, clean serving areas during meal service.
  • Assist with preparation tasks for the following day's meal service.

Food Safety and Sanitation

  • Follow all personal hygiene and food safety procedures.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of sanitation and food handling practices.
    Monitor and record food and equipment temperatures according to required guidelines.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and sanitary kitchen and serving environment.

Equipment and Facility Management

  • Turn on, test, and monitor kitchen equipment at the beginning of each shift.
  • Set up and break down serving areas and cafeteria spaces.
  • Wash and sanitize cooking utensils, serving tools, trays, and dishes.
  • Clean kitchen work areas, dining areas, and food preparation spaces.

Cashiering and Record Keeping

  • Operate the point of sale system and handle cashiering duties, to track amount food taken
  • Accurately record meals served and maintain required daily records and logs.

Inventory and Supplies

  • Receive food deliveries and assist with stocking and rotating inventory.
  • Ensure proper storage and organization of food and supplies.

Customer Service and Professional Conduct

  • Provide courteous and respectful service to students, staff, and visitors.
  • Demonstrate reliability, professionalism, and positive teamwork.
  • Participate in school nutrition promotions, special events, and community activities when needed.

Training and Compliance

  • Participate in required training and professional development.
  • Follow assigned schedules and time reporting procedures.

Other Duties

  • Perform additional related duties as assigned to support the school nutrition program.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The position will work predominantly Monday Friday at their assigned location.
