What is a part-time RN?

RN stands for registered nurse. Part-time RNs provide care for patients with illnesses and injuries. They often work in conjunction with physicians to develop treatment plans to help the patient become healthy again. Part-time RNs have the same job duties as full-time RNs; the main difference is that part-timers typically work thirty hours or less per week. Part-time RNs are not able to diagnose illnesses; once the doctor or other supervising health professional has determined what is ailing the patient, the RN is able to work with the patient to explain what the treatment plan entails and their role in recovery. As a part-time RN, your responsibilities may include documenting medical history, administering medications, and checking patient vital signs. You may also advise patients and families about how to continue treatment at home and how to prevent future illnesses.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a part-time RN?

To thrive as a Part Time RN, you need a current nursing license, strong clinical assessment skills, and familiarity with common medical procedures. Competence in electronic health records (EHRs), medication administration systems, and basic diagnostic equipment is necessary. Flexibility, excellent communication, and the ability to quickly adapt to changing patient needs are valuable soft skills. These abilities ensure effective patient care and seamless integration into healthcare teams, even with variable or reduced hours.

How do part-time RNs typically coordinate patient care and communication with full-time staff?

Part-time RNs often work closely with full-time nursing staff to ensure seamless patient care. They participate in shift handovers, maintain detailed patient notes, and communicate any changes in patient status to the incoming team. Effective collaboration and clear documentation are essential, as part-time RNs may not be present every day. Many healthcare facilities also use digital charting systems to keep all staff updated, helping part-time nurses stay informed and contribute effectively.

Job description

Passport Health
Registered Nurse - Travel Medicine
Passport Health is North America's largest travel medicine and immunization provider, with 300+ clinics across the U.S. and Canada. We're looking for experienced Registered Nurses who are ready to step away from the pace and pressure of traditional healthcare settings and into a role centered around autonomy, specialized clinical expertise, and meaningful one-on-one patient care.
Travel medicine allows you to use your nursing skills in a different way - helping clients prepare safely for international travel while building expertise in vaccines, global health risks, and preventative care.
What Makes This Role Different
Most of our nurses work independently in a clinic setting - no charge nurse responsibilities, no hospital-style task overload, and no constant competing priorities. You'll manage your clinic day by focusing on your clients, providing education, administering vaccines, and delivering an exceptional patient experience.
You'll have the support of a dedicated clinical leadership team, but your day-to-day practice is built around your clinical judgment and independence.
Travel medicine is a true specialty. You'll develop knowledge in areas many nurses never experience, including:
  • Vaccine-preventable diseases
  • International health risks
  • Destination-specific travel recommendations
  • Preventative health planning
  • Patient education and consultation
  • Every appointment is a conversation - not just another task to complete.

Current Opening Details
  • Location: Burbank, CA
  • Employment Type: Part-Time (PT)
  • Schedule: Approximately 24 hours/week
  • Compensation: Starting at $48.00/hour
  • Schedule Requirements: Monday-Friday clinic availability with Participation in a Saturday rotation required
  • Availability on Mondays and Fridays is required as part of the regular schedule

What You'll Do
  • Conduct comprehensive travel health consultations and educate clients on destination-specific health risks
  • Review travel plans and provide individualized vaccine and medication recommendations
  • Administer vaccines according to standing orders and monitor clients for adverse reactions
  • Recommend travel health products and medications when clinically appropriate
  • Manage clinic operations including inventory, documentation, and safety compliance
  • Support onsite corporate wellness and vaccination events as needed
  • Complete ongoing travel medicine training - we invest in keeping your clinical knowledge current

Scheduling - The Honest Picture
Passport Health uses a census-based scheduling model similar to many outpatient healthcare settings. We want nurses to understand the balance of this role: more flexibility and autonomy, with some variability based on patient demand.
Here's what that looks like:
  • Hours are based on client demand, which can vary by location and season
  • We build schedules with a focus on consistency and forward planning, typically looking 6-12 months ahead
  • Hours are not guaranteed in every market, but we work to create predictable schedules whenever possible
  • Nurses provide availability within defined scheduling windows to support long-term planning
  • Flexibility with preferred days/times, weekend coverage, or supporting multiple nearby clinics may increase scheduling opportunities
  • Peak travel season (typically February-August) generally brings increased and more consistent patient volume
  • The nurses who thrive at Passport Health value independence, flexibility, and the ability to balance meaningful patient care with their personal lives.

What You Need to Succeed
  • Active RN license in good standing
  • Compact (multistate) RN license accepted - you must legally reside in the state where you are licensed and providing care
  • 3+ years of clinical nursing experience (travel medicine experience is a plus, but not required)
  • Comfortable working independently in a clinic environment
  • Strong patient education and communication skills
  • Reliable access to a personal computer (training platforms require a desktop or laptop)
  • Experience using Google Workspace (Gmail, Drive, Docs, Meet)
  • Current First Aid/CPR certification
  • Ability to lift and transport vaccine inventory as needed (up to 25 lbs)

Ideal Candidates Are Nurses Who:
  • Enjoy patient education and building relationships
  • Want to use their nursing skills in a more consultative setting
  • Appreciate autonomy and independent decision-making
  • Are adaptable and comfortable balancing busy and slower clinic days
  • Are dependable and willing to support weekend coverage when scheduled
  • Want to continue learning and developing expertise in a specialty area

Ready to Apply? If you're an experienced RN looking for a different kind of nursing role - one where your clinical judgment is trusted and your patient interactions truly matter - we'd love to hear from you. Learn more: https://www.passporthealthusa.com/
