What We Look For In a SHSAT Tutor

• Advanced Test Mastery: Deep knowledge of SHSAT English Language Arts including revising and editing and reading comprehension, and Mathematics including word problems, algebra, geometry, probability, and statistics. Ability to explain passage analysis strategies, grid-in math problems, and logical reasoning while preparing New York City students for competitive admission to specialized high schools.
• Strategic Test-Taking & Problem-Solving: Skilled at teaching time allocation between ELA and Math sections, process of elimination for reading passages, and systematic approaches to multi-step math problems. Guides students through identifying grammar errors in context, analyzing complex informational and literary passages, solving rate and work problems, and approaching challenging geometry questions. Emphasizes strategic pacing and accuracy maximization.
• Curriculum Awareness & Adaptive Instruction: Familiar with SHSAT test format and common challenges such as advanced math content beyond grade-level curriculum, reading stamina for long passages, and grid-in answer formatting. Adapts instruction using official NYC Department of Education practice materials, timed section drills, and progressive difficulty problem sets to support seventh and eighth grade students competing for specialized high school admission.
• Effective Teaching Methods: Ability to identify concepts students commonly struggle with, explain material using multiple approaches, and adapt instruction to meet individual learning needs and styles.
• Strong communication skills and a friendly, engaging teaching style.
• Ability to adapt to different learning styles and student needs.
