Direct Support Professional (DSP) – In-Home Support

Location: New Castle, Virginia
Position Type: Part-Time
Schedule: 18 hours per week


Current Schedule

  • Monday: 3:30 PM – 8:00 PM
  • Wednesday: 3:00 PM – 8:30 PM
  • Saturday: 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM


Position Overview

Kahak Health Care Services is seeking a dependable and patient Direct Support Professional (DSP) to provide one-on-one in-home and community support to a school-aged individual.

This is a good fit for someone who enjoys working with children, communicates clearly, stays calm and patient, and is comfortable providing hands-on support when needed.


What You Will Do

The DSP will:

  • Help the individual communicate using an AAC communication device.
  • Give simple verbal and visual prompts when needed.
  • Encourage independence with daily activities.
  • Support bathing, dressing, restroom needs, meals, housekeeping, laundry, and other daily routines as needed.
  • Encourage exercise and physical activity, including swimming.
  • Support safe community activities and outings.
  • Provide transportation when required as part of scheduled supports.
  • Maintain close supervision for health and safety.
  • Follow all approved health, safety, and emergency protocols.
  • Complete accurate daily documentation.
  • Report health, safety, behavioral, or other concerns according to agency procedures.


What to Expect

The individual enjoys using a tablet, preferred foods and activities, and has an interest in acting.

Communication may be limited, so patience is important. The individual uses an AAC device to communicate wants and needs and may need extra time, prompting, and encouragement.

This case also requires a DSP who can remain attentive to safety. The individual has medical and safety support needs that will be reviewed during case-specific training.

  • Able to follow directions and established support plans.
  • Comfortable learning to support AAC communication.
  • Safety-focused and attentive.
  • Comfortable assisting with personal care and daily living activities.
  • Comfortable supporting physical and community activities.
  • Able to complete required documentation.
  • Reliable and able to consistently work the scheduled shifts.

Important

This position involves an individual with specific health and safety support needs. The selected DSP must complete all required agency and case-specific training before providing independent support.

Schedule availability is important. Applicants who can consistently work Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday shifts are encouraged to apply.


Requirements: A minimum of one year experience in the medical or a related field (social work, psychology, nursing assistance, etc.) and a high school diploma or equivalency. Must be 18 years of age. Additionally, the following are required:

  • A reliable car
  • A current driver's license
  • A current work authorization (US Passport, US Work Authorization card, Permanent Resident Card) or a Birth Certificate
  • Social Security Card
  • Current auto insurance
  • Current CPR & First Aid
  • Current physical exam
  • Current tuberculosis test with negative result
  • Resume
