Job description

Passport Health (PPH) Travel Health Nurse Practitioner (NP) provides comprehensive, evidence-based pre-travel medical care to individuals traveling internationally. Practicing autonomously within the scope defined by the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives, the NP is authorized to assess, diagnose, order and interpret diagnostic tests, and prescribe medications related to travel health.

In this role, the NP prepares clients for safe travel by delivering education and guidance to support informed travel health and safety decisions. This includes administering vaccinations and prescribing and/or dispensing medications and products to prevent and manage travel-related conditions such as malaria, traveler’s diarrhea, altitude sickness, motion sickness, and other communicable infectious diseases, including vaccine-preventable illnesses.

As a Prescribing Travel Health Nurse Practitioner, you will support clients by providing medications for malaria prophylaxis, treatment of traveler’s diarrhea, prevention of altitude-related illness, and management of motion sickness. In addition to direct patient care, the NP collaborates with Travel Health Consultant Registered Nurses (RNs) by offering clinical advice and support related to prescribing and patient management.

In certain locations, the NP may also conduct specialized medical assessments related to fitness for travel, including evaluations for adventure travelers, military personnel, contractors, and government employees.

The NP is responsible for collaborating with physicians and a multidisciplinary healthcare team, while also contributing to the development, review, and adherence to organizational policies and clinical practices. As a member of the clinical team, the NP participates in regular meetings with leadership and peers to support quality care and continuous improvement.

This role may require coverage across multiple clinic locations within British Columbia and may include providing services in different settings or remotely. Scheduling is based on client demand, clinic needs, and NP availability. This is a temporary, part-time position reporting to the Regional Nurse Manager.

Role & Responsibilities

  • Travel Health consultant, directly caring for the health and safety needs of internationals travelers

  • Prescriber, work with Passport Health RN travel consultant and their clients to ensure they have all necessary prescriptions required for their travel to include malaria prophylaxis, treatment of traveler’s diarrhea and altitude sickness prevention.

  • Review the client’s health history and travel plans utilizing telephonic or video platforms

  • Confirm the absence of any contraindication and/or medication interactions

  • Educate clients regarding appropriate frequency and duration of medication therapy based on their travel plans

  • Provide education related to potential medication side effects and how to alleviate them

  • Communicate with Pharmacy staff as needed to provide prescription details

  • Utilizing e-prescription technology, Passport Health NP will be specifically hired and trained for this role.

  • Provide detailed documentation in the client’s chart that includes medication name, dose, quantity, route, frequency and duration of therapy. Include any patient specific education provided.

  • Provide complete travel health consultations that include review of client’s medical history, review of relevant travel itineraries, and utilization of guidelines to recommend appropriate vaccination and preventive medication. These recommendations are then effectively communicated to PPH customers.

  • Provide vaccinations to PPH customers

  • Prescribe Laboratory request and follow up on the results

  • Refer to specialists when required

  • Work collaboratively with physicians, nurses, pharmacists, and public health professionals as needed

  • Participate in continuing education in travel medicine

  • Follow national and international travel health guidelines

  • Serve as a resource for the clinical staff

Requirements and skills

  • Must hold a current license to practice as a Nurse Practitioner in British Columbia

  • Must hold state certification to prescribe in British Columbia

  • Comfortable working with new technologies on a daily basis

  • Strong analytical thinking, planning, prioritization, and execution skills

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills

  • Ability to work independently

  • Must be available to work 8 hours/week (4 hour shifts)
