Join Our Team as a Civic Engagement Specialist!
Are you passionate about supporting the justice involved population, and making a real difference in their lives? EAC Network, a leading not-for-profit social service agency dedicated to helping over 80,000 people through 120 impactful programs across Long Island and NYC, is looking for a dedicated part time Civic Engagement Specialist to join the Civic Engagement Program!
Wage: $25-28/hour
Schedule: up to 21 hours per week; Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday - 8AM to 4PM
Location: Rikers Island in Queens, NY
What drives the core purpose of this job:
The Civic Engagement Specialist (Rikers Island) is responsible for delivering nonpartisan voter education and civic participation services to individuals in custody within New York City Department of Correction (NYCDOC) facilities. The Specialist provides in-person education regarding voting rights under New York State law, assists eligible individuals with voter registration and absentee ballot applications, and promotes civic awareness and engagement prior to community reentry.
Principal Duties & Responsibilities:
  1. Provide in-custody, nonpartisan voter education to individuals regarding their eligibility to vote under New York State law.
  2. Assist eligible individuals in completing voter registration forms and absentee ballot applications.
  3. Facilitate voter registration drives across NYCDOC facilities in coordination with facility staff.
  4. Conduct civic engagement workshops and educational sessions to promote awareness of civic rights and responsibilities.
  5. Maintain strict neutrality and compliance with all federal, state, and local election laws.
  6. Submit completed voter registration and absentee ballot forms to the Division of Programs and Community Partnerships (DPCP) in accordance with established procedures.
  7. Utilize the DOC program tracking database to record participation data accurately and timely.
  8. Maintain sign-in sheets and attendance documentation for all service dates.
  9. Comply with all NYCDOC security clearance procedures, volunteer trainings, and background check requirements.
  10. Work exclusively from DOC-approved computer terminals and follow all facility security protocols.
  11. Perform other duties as assigned by supervision and EAC Network administration.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Required:
  1. High School diploma or educational equivalent required.
  2. Demonstrated experience assisting individuals with voter registration strongly preferred.
  3. Experience working in correctional or secure settings preferred
  4. Strong knowledge of New York State voting eligibility laws preferred.
  5. Ability to explain civic processes in a clear, nonpartisan, and accessible manner.
  6. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  7. Ability to engage respectfully with justice-involved individuals.
  8. Strong organizational and documentation skills.
  9. Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and database entry systems.
  10. Ability to comply with institutional security requirements and maintain professional boundaries.
