WHAT YOU'LL DO IN THIS POSITION

Job Summary:

The primary role of Research and Global Health facultyat the BYU School of Medicine (BYU MED)is to mentor medical students in spiritually grounded, scientifically rigorous global healthresearch. Facultymaintainhighimpact research portfoliosin areas of strategic importance to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, with an emphasis on addressing high-priority global health and humanitarian issues. Research and Global Health faculty willmodel ethical and participatory research practices, collaborate with localpartners, and supervise students during immersive global health fieldwork-all while exemplifying the Christ-like attributes of a disciplescholar.Research and Global Health Faculty are also expected tocontributesome effortto areasof teaching and citizenship(service)as assigned by their department chair.

Duties and Expectations:

  • Mentor medical students throughout the longitudinal experiential learning research curriculum. Expectations for the number of students mentored will bedeterminedbased onthe percentage ofeffortallocatedto scholarship.

  • Teach students problem-solving and critical thinking, fundamental research skills, global health principles, bathed in the light of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

  • Facilitatehigh-qualitystudent research experience,includingmeaningful scholarly production.

  • Apply participatory research principles to all partnerships, fostering equal co-creative relationships with partnersrepresentingthe populations their research intends to serve.

  • Mayfacilitateglobal health-focused small group and case-based learning throughout the longitudinal curriculum.

  • Will be expected to supervise studentsparticipatingin the Research and Global Health Immersive Experience at off-campus field work sites.

  • Mayparticipateinresearchcouncils, scientific review boards, or committees.

  • May serve in BYU MED research leadership positions if appointed.

  • Demonstrate careful stewardship of internal research funding andseekmission-aligned external funding to support research.

  • Mayparticipatein scholarship of application work for the Humanitarian Services or Missionary Medical departments of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

  • Research and Global Health Faculty will belong to one of the two BYU MED Academic Departments. Under the direction of their Department Chair, full-time faculty will have other responsibilities within the School of Medicine,including teaching and citizenship(service).

WHAT QUALIFIES YOU FOR THIS ROLE

Required Degree: MD, PhD, or equivalent degreepreferred; MPH or equivalent master's degreerequired. The required degree must be completed by the start date.

Experience:

Required Experience:

  • Alignment with and commitment to the mission, values, and spiritual aims of Brigham Young University (BYU) and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

  • Established record as an independent investigator leading productive, high-impact research, preferably in a global health-related field.

  • Experience supervising students in research or in a global health setting.

  • Experience leading global health or humanitarian initiatives.

  • Sound understanding of global health and humanitarian principles.

Preferred Experience:

  • Established relationships with community, academic, governmental, and/or non-governmental partners in international or underserved domestic locations.

  • Experience working with humanitarian initiatives sponsored by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

  • Familiarity with participatory research principles and/orimplementationsciencemethodology.
