GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB
The Part-Time Evening Librarian supports library operations during evening and weekend hours by assisting patrons, supervising student workers, and providing research, reference, and instructional assistance. This position plays an essential role in promoting library services, supporting academic success, and ensuring a welcoming and effective learning environment. The Evening Librarian must be able to work 20-25 hours per week in the evenings, and is required to work weekends as assigned while providing occasional online support.
SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
  • Assist in designing and delivering information literacy instruction for students and faculty.
  • Contribute to the creation and maintenance of research guides, tutorials, and other instructional materials.
  • Provide reference, research, and technical assistance to students, faculty, alumni, and community users.
  • Perform circulation desk duties, including check-in/out, shelving, and maintaining patron records.
  • Support the Evening Library Supervisor in managing the Center of Information Desk during evenings and weekends, ensuring library policies are enforced and tasks are appropriately assigned.
  • Assist in supervising and mentoring evening work-study students and library interns.
  • Participate in the selection and evaluation of print, digital, and multimedia materials for collection development.
  • Contribute to library assessment, data tracking, and long-range planning initiatives.
  • Lead or assist with library marketing, outreach, and promotion efforts to enhance campus and community engagement.
  • Participate actively in professional development, organizational memberships, and college committees.
  • Assist with grant writing, library projects, and related promotional activities as needed.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications
MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
A Master's Degree in Library Science or an equivalent field is required. The ideal candidate will have at least one year of library experience, preferably in an academic setting, along with experience serving a diverse population of patrons. Strong written and oral communication skills are essential, as well as proficiency with social media and advanced computer applications, including the Microsoft Office suite. The candidate should demonstrate competence in using library databases, integrated library systems (ILS), and digital resources. Familiarity with digital management tools such as Google Drive and Dropbox is preferred. Excellent customer service skills and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively are required. Experience supervising staff, student workers, or interns is highly desirable. Evening and weekend availability is required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS OR STANDARDS REQUIRED
TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Physical Requirements: Must be physically able to operate a variety of automated office machines and equipment including a computer, telephone, copier, etc. Must be able to exert up to five pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time, but may involve walking or standing for brief periods of time. Must be able to lift or carry weights ranging from five to ten pounds.
Data Conception: Requires the ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable, functional, structural or compositional characteristics (whether similar to or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people or things.
Interpersonal Communication: Requires the ability of speaking and/or signaling people to convey or exchange information. Includes receiving assignments and/or directions from supervisors.
Language Ability: Requires the ability to read a variety of policy and procedure manuals, program guidelines, student records, etc. Requires the ability to enter data into computer and prepare reports, correspondence, records, etc., with proper format, punctuation, spelling and grammar, using all parts of speech. Must be able to speak with poise, voice control and confidence and to articulate information to others.
Intelligence: Requires the ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions. Requires the ability to make independent judgments in the absence of supervisor; to acquire knowledge of topics related to primary occupation. Must have the ability to comprehend and interpret received information and the ability to comprehend and implement basic office machinery functions.
Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, to follow oral and written instructions; to teach and counsel students. Must be able to communicate effectively and efficiently in a variety of technical or professional terminology including educational counseling, psychology, health, etc.
Numerical Aptitude: Requires the ability to add and subtract totals, to multiply and divide, to determine percentages and decimals, to determine time. Must be able to use practical applications of fractions, percentages, ratio and proportion.
Form/Spatial Aptitude: Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, width and shape, and visually read various information.
Motor Coordination: Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes rapidly and accurately in using automated office equipment and communications machinery.
Manual Dexterity: Requires the ability to handle a variety of items including computer keyboards, office equipment, control knobs, switches, etc. Must have minimal levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.
Color Discrimination: Does not require the ability to differentiate between colors and shades of color.
Interpersonal Temperament: Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under minimal levels of stress when confronted with an emergency or tight deadline.
Physical Communication: Requires the ability to talk and hear: (talking: expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken words; hearing: perceiving nature of sounds by ear). Must be able to hear and understand communications through a telephone.
