Job Summary:
The Swallowing and Salivary Bioscience Laboratory (SSBL) offers a unique opportunity combining advanced research responsibilities with specialized videofluoroscopic imaging duties in a highly collaborative academic research environment. The role is well-suited for candidates with a strong interest in dysphagia research, imaging science, and translational clinical research.
This position supports interdisciplinary research within the SSBL, with primary responsibility for execution, coordination, and analysis of dysphagia research studies. Approximately 80% of duties involve research support activities including videofluoroscopic image analysis, study visit coordination, data management, and research operations. The remaining 20% of duties involve operating fluoroscopy equipment during human subjects research visits, requiring appropriate radiation technologist training and credentialing.

- This position has been identified as a position of trust with access to vulnerable populations. The selected candidate will be required to pass an initial caregiver check to be eligible for employment under the Wisconsin Caregiver Law and every four years.
Candidates who demonstrate the following knowledge, skills, and abilities will be given first consideration
- Strong organizational, analytical, and documentation skills
- Familiarity with clinical research regulations (e.g., IRB protocols, human subjects protections)
Key Job Responsibilities:
- Performs quality checks
- Serves as a main point of contact for clinical research participants, providing information regarding research procedures, expectations, and informational inquiries. Ensures participants follow the research protocol and alerts Principal Investigator of issues
- Operates radiologic equipment during dysphagia research study visits according to research protocols, imaging standards, and radiation safety regulations
- Identifies work unit resources needs and manages supply and equipment inventory levels
- Manages research workflow components, collects, prepares, processes, and submits participant data and samples to appropriate entities, adhering to research protocols
- May assist with training of staff
- Recruits, screens, selects, determines eligibility and enrolls trial participants, collects more complex information, performs medical assessments, and answers varied questions under supervision of a medically licensed professional. Performs medical assessments after completion of required training/certification, such as collecting vital signs, obtaining weight, and performing phlebotomy
- Identifies resource needs and develops clinical research documents, such as job aids, tools, processes, procedures, and training. Contributes to the development of protocols
- Schedules logistics, determines workflows, and secures resources for clinical research trials
- Performs analysis of videofluoroscopic swallow study images to derive metrics as study outcomes.
- Conducts routine quality control checks and troubleshoot imaging equipment issues, ensure proper cleaning, disinfection, and safety of imaging rooms and equipment, and maintain compliance with institutional, state, and federal radiation safety requirements

Compensation:
The starting salary for the position is $60,000 annually but is negotiable based on experience and qualifications.

Effective July 1, 2024, the U.S. Department of Labor Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) requires that positions earning less than $43,888 annually be considered non-exempt under FLSA provisions for overtime. Based on these rules, if the person selected for this recruitment will earn less than the new salary threshold at July 1, 2024 ($43,888 annually), they will be an academic staff non-exempt employee, will be paid hourly and will receive overtime compensation for any hours worked over 40 in a workweek.
Required Qualifications:
- Credentialed Radiologic Technologist with fluoroscopy training (e.g., ARRT certification or equivalent)
- Eligible for or currently holding appropriate Wisconsin licensure to operate fluoroscopy equipment
- Demonstrated experience operating radiologic or fluoroscopic imaging equipment
- Experience working with human research participants or in a clinical/research setting
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with research, swallowing physiology, or videofluoroscopic swallowing studies
- Experience analyzing imaging data for research purposes
- Experience training or supervising student researchers
- Experience interacting with older adults and persons with cognitive impairment
- Experience with scheduling in a clinical or research setting
Education:
Bachelor's Degree preferred; focus in communication sciences and disorders, health sciences, biology, radiologic sciences, or related discipline preferred
