Job description

Newsletter Editor (Part Time)
WQED Multimedia | Remote
We are currently unable to support international remote employment. Candidates must be physically located in and legally authorized to work in the United States without requiring visa sponsorship.
Reports to: Marketing Director
About the Role
WQED Multimedia is seeking a part-time Newsletter Editor to help our neighbors discover what is available to watch, stream, hear, attend, and enjoy through WQED. This role is part editor, part curator, part community guide. The Newsletter Editor will write and produce WQED's weekly email newsletter and related audience messages, helping viewers and listeners navigate PBS programming, WQED local productions, Classical WQED 89.3 FM, WQED+, PBS KIDS, events, education resources, and other offerings that serve southwestern Pennsylvania.
We are looking for someone who can write with warmth, clarity, and good judgment; understand what makes public media valuable; and turn a busy programming lineup into a useful, engaging guide for the community. The ideal candidate is a strong writer and careful editor who can explain why a program matters, who it may appeal to, when and where to watch or stream it, and how WQED helps make it available to the region.
Required Cover Letter
Applications must include a cover letter and should include two or three writing samples. Please briefly tell us why this kind of public media "viewer's guide" work interests you and how you would help WQED make its programming more useful, discoverable, and welcoming to the community. Concise responses are fine. We value clarity over length.
Key Responsibilities
  • Write and produce WQED's weekly email newsletter, including subject lines, preheaders, headlines, blurbs, calls to action, and basic formatting.
  • Curate highlights from PBS, WQED local programming, Classical WQED, WQED+, PBS KIDS, events, education initiatives, and community resources.
  • Translate program descriptions, schedules, streaming availability, and internal notes into clear, audience-friendly copy.
  • Help viewers and listeners understand what is new, what is timely, what is local, and what is worth their attention.
  • Collaborate with Marketing, Programming, Digital, Development, Education, and Classical WQED colleagues to gather accurate information and identify priorities.
  • Maintain a consistent WQED voice: warm, neighborly, useful, Pittsburgh-focused, and grounded in public service.
  • Assemble and proof occasional special-purpose emails and announcements tied to major programs, station events, fundraising campaigns, or community initiatives.
  • Review newsletter performance, including open rates, click-throughs, and audience behavior, and use those insights to improve future editions.
  • Proofread carefully for accuracy, grammar, links, dates, times, channel information, streaming language, and tone.
  • Help develop repeatable newsletter formats, editorial calendars, and workflows that make the newsletter easier to produce and more valuable to readers.

Qualifications
  • Excellent writing, editing, and proofreading skills.
  • Strong editorial judgment and the ability to make choices about what is most useful or interesting to the audience.
  • Experience writing newsletters, digital content, program descriptions, arts/culture coverage, marketing copy, journalism, or public media communications.
  • Ability to write short, compelling copy that helps people decide what to watch, stream, hear, attend, or share.
  • Comfort working with schedules, program information, links, images, and digital publishing tools.
  • Experience reviewing basic newsletter analytics and using performance data to improve content.
  • Strong attention to detail, especially with dates, times, titles, names, and calls to action.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating with colleagues across departments.
  • Interest in PBS, public media, local storytelling, arts and culture, classical music, education, and community service.
  • Familiarity with Pittsburgh and southwestern Pennsylvania is preferred.

About WQED
WQED Multimedia is an iconic public media institution-one of America's original educational broadcasters. Today, we reach hundreds of thousands of neighbors across southwestern Pennsylvania through five broadcast television channels, streaming platforms, 24/7 classical radio, and education and community engagement programs.
This is a moment of real transformation. With major shifts in media consumption, the launch of new digital products like WQED+, the elimination of our federal funding, and growing demand for trusted, hopeful, local storytelling-WQED is evolving from a traditional broadcaster into a multi-platform community resource.
Joining WQED now means an opportunity to help shape how Pittsburgh connects through stories, culture, learning, and shared experiences: on air, online, and in person.
Schedule, Pay & Benefits
  • On-call position classified as a temporary Project Employee
  • Between 10 and 15 hours per week, with flexibility to increase depending on station needs and employee availability
  • Hourly, non-exempt position
  • Pay range: $27-$32 per hour, based on experience.
  • No benefits or paid time off beyond what may be required by the Allegheny County Paid Sick Leave Ordinance and the City of Pittsburgh Paid Sick Days Act
