What is a part time remote accounting job?

A part time remote accounting job involves performing accounting tasks, such as bookkeeping, preparing financial statements, or managing accounts payable and receivable, while working from a location outside of a traditional office and on a part-time basis. This means you usually work fewer hours than a full-time role, often with flexible scheduling. Remote accountants use digital tools to collaborate with clients or employers, making it possible to balance work with other commitments. These positions are popular among those seeking work-life balance or needing flexible work arrangements.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a part time remote accountant?

To thrive as a Part Time Remote Accountant, you need a solid understanding of accounting principles, financial reporting, and relevant educational credentials such as a degree in accounting or finance. Proficiency with accounting software like QuickBooks, Xero, or Microsoft Excel, and sometimes certifications like CPA or CMA, is typically required. Strong organizational skills, self-motivation, and clear communication are essential soft skills for managing tasks independently and collaborating remotely. These skills ensure accurate financial management, compliance, and effective remote teamwork in a flexible work environment.

How do part time remote accounting professionals typically manage communication and collaboration with team members and clients?

Part-time remote accounting professionals often use digital collaboration tools such as email, video conferencing, and cloud-based accounting software to stay connected with both their team and clients. Clear communication and regular check-ins are essential, as you may be working across different time zones or schedules. Many organizations have established routines, like weekly team meetings and shared task boards, to ensure everyone is aligned and deadlines are met. Building strong virtual communication skills and proactively addressing questions or issues helps maintain efficiency and trust in a remote environment.

Job description

GARRISON LEGAL SEARCH FIRM
We're Hiring: Senior Accounting & Benefits Administrator
Washington, DC • Remote (Hybrid) • Part-Time, 25-30 hrs/week • Flexible Schedule
At Garrison Legal Search Firm, our proudest achievement isn't the 2,000+ elite attorneys we've placed over four decades - it's the culture we've built along the way. From our Washington, DC headquarters, we've earned the legal industry's trust through an approach defined by integrity, discretion, and genuine relationships: high touch, high truth, high trust. But what we're most proud of is the close-knit team behind it all - a group where everyone has a place, where we take our work seriously without ever taking ourselves too seriously, and where we invest deeply in our people.
Now, we're looking for a Senior Accounting and Benefits Administrator to serve as the financial backbone of our firm - owning our full accounting and financial management, payroll, and benefits administration while partnering directly with the firm's three owners as a trusted advisor on the numbers that drive our decisions. This is far more than a bookkeeping role. You'll be the person who "keeps the trains running," advising leadership on vendors, budgets, and financial strategy, and providing the thought leadership that helps guide our firm's continued growth and long-term sustainability.
If you're the kind of professional who thrives on autonomy, values a flexible remote schedule, and wants your work to make a direct and visible impact, you'll find a rare opportunity here: a genuine seat at the table within a warm, welcoming team that will make you feel like part of the family from day one. We invest in our people, and this is your chance to lead, be seen, and truly matter. If that sounds like you, we'd love to meet you.
What You'll Do
Accounting & Financial Management
• Own accounts receivable - generating client fee invoices and recording bank deposits
• Manage accounts payable - entering vendor and expense invoices and compiling supporting documentation
• Reconcile bank, credit card, and loan accounts, and download monthly statements
• Prepare monthly Profit & Loss reports and weekly, monthly, and annual reports on fees, commissions, payroll, expenses, and placements
• Administer bimonthly payroll in full compliance with DMV-area tax laws
• Process owner (3) commissions to LLCs, maintain a QuickBooks file for each, and assist with tax preparation
• Prepare quarterly federal and state tax estimates for the three LLCs
• Generate annual W-2s for employees and 1099s as required
• Handle monthly DC sales tax, annual personal property and Unclaimed Property filings, US AIES Census, and bi-annual DCRA filing and business license
• Partner with our outside accounting firm to prepare annual corporate tax returns
• Support the COO in preparing for and running the Year-End Partner Meeting
Technology, AI & Adaptability
• Leverage technology and automation to improve efficiency, accuracy, reporting, and workflow
• Use AI-enabled tools for data analysis, reporting, and reconciliation while exercising sound judgment
• Apply appropriate confidentiality, ethical standards, and human oversight with AI-assisted tools
Benefits & Human Resources
• Manage, evaluate, and administer company benefits, including 401(k), SmartBenefits, and Flexible Spending Accounts
• Maintain employee files and Paid Time Off (PTO)
What You Bring
• A Bachelor's degree, preferably in Business Administration, Accounting, or a related field
• Strong proficiency in Outlook, Excel, and Word
• Hands-on experience with QuickBooks (or similar accounting software), including report generation
• Experience entering data in CRM databases
• Comfort with modern accounting, HR, payroll, and productivity technologies - and the ability to learn new systems quickly
• Adaptability to evolving business needs, regulatory changes, and emerging technologies
• A proactive, phone-friendly communication style, sound judgment, and genuine care for the team's success
The Details
Schedule: Approximately 30 hours per week, with a flexible schedule that fits your life
Location: Remote, based in Washington, DC. Preference for candidates within commuting distance, with an expectation to come into the office a couple of times per month
Salary: $56 an hour w/ full benefits
Reports To: Chief Operating Officer
