GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB
Under general supervision, performs firefighting and fire prevention duties in order to protect and safeguard lives and property of citizens in the event of fire. Assists in the maintenance and repair of fire station and equipment. Reports to the Shift Battalion Chief.
SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Is responsible for saving lives and property of Kershaw County residents and others in case of fire or other emergency; performs firefighting and prevention duties to include driving fire trucks, operating fire truck pump, searching and rescuing victims, salvaging property, overhauling, responding to alarms, and performing medical care as needed.
Conducts fire inspections to include installing smoke detectors, inspecting apartments and businesses, etc.; plans for possible fires and draws evacuation routes for the public as needed.
Maintains firefighting equipment and fire station which includes checking truck fire pump, checking truck and portable radios, maintaining truck equipment, air cylinders and fire hoses.
Provides general fire station maintenance duties to include raising and lowering flags, emptying trash, sweeping and mopping floors, vacuuming floors, cleaning restrooms, washing fire trucks, cleaning kitchen, buffing and waxing floors, etc.
Maintains lawns and grounds as needed.
Utilizes and operates various types of machinery and equipment including fire apparatus, hoses, air compressors, generators, radios, computer, copier, chain saw, hand tools, pumpers, fire extinguishers, and general office supplies.
Works under stressful, high-risk conditions and with life threatening situations.
Represents Kershaw County Fire Service at various civic organizations and activities.
Is responsible for responding to on-call emergencies at all times.

TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS
Part-Time Firefighters could live and work in a fire station up to 24-hour shift. This work environment includes many of the same amenities of a home, including kitchens, showers, beds, etc. In this environment, Firefighters will perform routine day-to-day activities, such as training, meeting with supervisors, and other daily activities. Outside of the fire station, Firefighters work in all weather, under extreme emergency conditions (e.g., fires, hazardous materials, auto accidents) performing essential job functions.
MINIMUM POSITION REQUIREMENTS AND CERTIFICATION
High school diploma or equivalent
Minimum 18 years of age.
Must have a valid driver's license. If out of state, must have the ability to obtain a South Carolina driver's license.
Must pass required pre-employment NFPA 1582 physical, background check, and job-related agility test (JRAT).

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS OR STANDARDS REQUIRED
TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Physical Requirements: Must be physically able to operate different types of machinery and equipment including fire apparatus and other firefighting equipment, etc. Must be physically able to exert up to one hundred pounds of force occasionally and/or frequently to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Physical demands are in excess of sedentary work. Work involves reaching, stooping, bending, standing, walking, running, climbing, crawling and balancing.
Date Conception: Requires the ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable functional, structural, or compositional characteristics (whether similar to or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people of things.
Interpersonal Communication: Requires the ability of speaking and/or signaling people to convey or exchange pertinent and vital information to co-workers. Includes the receiving of information and instructions from supervisor.
Language Ability: Requires the ability to read and prepare a variety of documents and reports using the proper format, punctuation, spelling and grammar. Has the ability to speak with co-workers and the general public with poise, voice control and confidence. Must be able to speak effectively to large groups. Voice and language must be clearly expressed so that radio transmission can be clearly understood.
Intelligence: Has the ability to learn and apply principles of rational systems such as investigative law enforcement in order to solve problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists; to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic or schedule form.
Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to record and deliver information and to follow verbal and written instructions. Is able to communicate by way of two-way radio.
Numerical Aptitude: Requires the ability to utilize mathematical formulas; add and subtract totals; multiply and divide; determine percentages and decimals; determine time and weight.
Form/Spatial Aptitude: Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, width and shape.
Motor Coordination: Must have excellent hand/eye coordination. Requires the ability to operate motor vehicles.
Manual Dexterity: Requires the ability to handle a variety of small items such as knobs, switches, needles, medicine vials, etc. Must be able to twist, push and pull knobs or switches, etc. Must have maximum levels of foot/hand/eye coordination.
Color Discrimination: Requires the ability to differentiate colors and shades of color.
Interpersonal Temperament: Has the ability to deal with people beyond receiving instructions. The worker needs to relate to people in situations involving more than receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under high stress when confronted with emergency, dangerous and life-threatening situations
Physical Communication: Requires the ability to talk and/or hear (talking - expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken words; hearing - perceiving the nature of sounds by ear). Must be able to speak clearly and must be able to hear low, monotone sounds such as whispers, blood pressure and lung sounds, etc.

Knowledge of Job: Has considerable knowledge of the practices, procedures, rules and regulations of the Fire Department. Has knowledge of the activities related to fire administration and firefighting. Knows how to maintain emergency vehicles and related equipment, supplies and materials. Is highly skilled in administering first aid and CPR, as well as other medical treatments and assistance. Has knowledge of proper techniques relating to firefighting and extinguishment. Is able to effectively maintain fire station and related equipment and supplies. Is able to communicate both orally and in writing with various agencies, and individuals of a variety of professions. Is able to respond, act and think quickly and accurately in stressful and/or emergency situations. Is able to maintain accurate records of policies and procedures established by the department. Is able to communicate effectively, follow the instructions, and give instructions clearly and concisely on occasion. Has the ability to operate and maintain various equipment and machines, operating the same in a safe manner. Is able to work in varying degrees of adverse weather conditions. Knows how to operate two-way radio equipment. Is knowledgeable of radio codes and signals. Is able to work under highly stressful conditions.

Exercises immediate remedial action to correct any quality deficiencies that occur in areas of responsibility.
