What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Part Time Python GIS Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Part Time Python GIS Developer, you need strong proficiency in Python programming, spatial data analysis, and a background in GIS concepts, often supported by a degree in computer science, geography, or a related field. Familiarity with tools like ArcGIS, QGIS, and libraries such as GDAL, GeoPandas, and Shapely, as well as experience with version control systems, is essential. Excellent problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication help you collaborate efficiently and deliver precise geospatial solutions. These skills and qualities ensure accurate spatial data processing, reliable project delivery, and successful teamwork in dynamic, project-based environments.

How does a part-time Python GIS Developer typically collaborate with other team members on geospatial projects?

As a part-time Python GIS Developer, you’ll often work closely with GIS analysts, project managers, and data scientists to develop, maintain, or improve geospatial applications and tools. Collaboration usually involves participating in remote meetings, sharing code and documentation through platforms like Git or cloud services, and providing technical input on project requirements. Communication is key, especially since part-time roles may require effective hand-offs and regular status updates to ensure continuity across the team. This collaborative environment allows you to contribute to complex projects while maintaining a flexible schedule.

What does a Part Time Python GIS Developer do?

A Part Time Python GIS Developer is responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining geographic information system (GIS) applications using the Python programming language. They typically work on spatial data analysis, automation of GIS workflows, and integration of GIS data with other systems. Their work may involve using libraries like ArcPy, GeoPandas, or QGIS to process geospatial data, create maps, and develop tools that help organizations make data-driven decisions. Since the role is part-time, these developers often work flexible hours or on a project basis.

What is the difference between Part Time Python Gis Developer vs GIS Analyst?

AspectPart Time Python GIS DeveloperGIS Analyst
Required SkillsPython programming, GIS software, spatial data analysisGIS software proficiency, spatial data analysis, cartography
Work EnvironmentProject-based, flexible hours, remote or on-siteOffice-based, full-time or part-time, collaborative teams
Industry UsageTech firms, environmental agencies, mapping servicesGovernment agencies, urban planning, environmental consulting

Part Time Python GIS Developers focus on coding, software development, and technical GIS tasks, often working on specific projects. What this opportunity involves

While each project involves unique tasks, contributors may:

  • Design original computational chemistry problems that simulate real chemistry research workflows;
  • Create problems requiring Python programming to solve (using numpy, scipy, chemical libraries);
  • Ensure problems are computationally intensive and cannot be solved manually within reasonable timeframes (days/weeks);
  • Develop problems requiring non-trivial reasoning chains in physical chemistry, quantum chemistry, and molecular modeling;
  • Base problems on real research challenges or practical applications from chemistry practice;
  • Verify solutions using Python with standard computational chemistry approaches;
  • Document problem statements clearly and provide verified correct answers.

What we look for

This opportunity is a good fit for chemistry specialists with an experience in python open to part-time, non-permanent projects. Ideally, contributors will have:

  • Degree in Chemistry or related fields;
  • Python proficiency for numerical validation. MATLAB, R, C, SQL, Numpy, Pandas, SciPy, domain-specific libraries, Stata or knowledge of any programming language can be equivalent;
