The Opportunity:
As a back-end developer, you know that a good site or system needs the right combination of clean code, APIs, analytics, and infrastructure to develop a user-focused solution. We're looking for an experienced back-end developer with the software engineering skills it takes to identify potential risks, contribute to solution development, and create efficient and effective systems for our clients.
As a back-end developer at Booz Allen, you'll use the latest architectural approaches and open-source frameworks and tools to deliver solutions. Using your software engineering experience, you'll work with the development team to create custom tools, systems, and sites with consistent performance and scalability.
In this role, you'll provide code management support for the different applications, develop regression testing protocols, ensure that the applications can build and run all supported tests on all supported platforms, maintain up to date documentation, develop and support release protocols, support hierarchical system development of the applications, and triage, investigate, and resolve bugs reported to the supported applications. You Have:
  • 5+ years of experience implementing, maintaining, and supporting Agile software development and scientific DevOps workflows to modernize complex modeling or computational systems, including operational support for the weather forecasting applications
  • 5+ years of experience in software development using Python, C, C++, Fortran, shell scripting, or HPC programming environments such as MPI, OpenMP, or hybrid parallelization
  • Experience with Agile methodology, scientific software engineering, product development, workflow automation, and code management in large-scale modeling applications
  • Experience developing and maintaining backend computational components, including data assimilation workflows, model coupling systems, performance benchmarking, HPC portability, and optimization for enterprise-scale scientific applications
  • Experience designing solutions to complex computational or modeling problems within collaborative, cross-functional scientific and engineering teams
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust or Suitability/Fitness determination based on client requirements
  • Bachelor's degree or 8+ years of software engineering experience in lieu of a degree

Nice If You Have:
  • Experience with Python, Fortran, C, C++, containerization such as Docker or Singularity, CI/CD pipelines such as GitHub Actions or GitLab CI/CD, and cross-platform HPC or cloud workflows
  • Experience writing, enhancing, or optimizing source code for scientific applications, numerical solvers, or coupled Earth-system models
  • Experience gathering technical requirements, supporting workflow integration, and automating multi-step systems such as UFS, HYCOM, MOM6, or JEDI-based applications
  • Experience using automated testing tools, scientific verification methods such as MMS, or performance-profiling utilities to support robust system development
  • Master's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Computational Modeling, or a related field preferred; Doctorate degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Computational Modeling, or a related field a plus

Salary at Booz Allen is determined by various factors, including but not limited to location, the individual's particular combination of education, knowledge, skills, competencies, and experience, as well as contract-specific affordability and organizational requirements. The projected compensation range for this position is $86,800.00 to $198,000.00 (annualized USD). The estimate displayed represents the typical salary range for this position and is just one component of Booz Allen's total compensation package for employees.
