Participates in a GIS intern program designed to enhance professional development with on-the-job experience while pursuing an undergraduate degree. Under supervision of a GIS Analyst, performs some of the essential functions of a GIS Analyst over the course of one college semester.
Responsibilities
  • Validate accuracy of GIS data, and update databases accordingly.
  • Obtain, compile, and analyze GIS data from a variety of sources, including DWGs, drone imagery, and field collection.
  • Assist in the planning, research, development, and preparation of projects, including web applications and geoprocessing scripts.
  • Draft correspondence to answer inquiries and respond to requests about projects.
  • Create and maintain files, records, and documentation of relevant data.
  • Related duties as directed by the intern supervisor.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Fully-matriculated University of Utah student currently obtaining an undergraduate degree in GIS, or a certificate in Applied GIS.
  • If the student is obtaining an undergraduate degree in GIS, must be in the junior or senior year of their program.
  • If the student is obtaining a certificate in Applied GIS, must have completed the following program requirements preceding the internship course GEOG 5940: GEOG 1180/COMP 1010 and GEOG 3100; either GEOG 3180 or GEOG 4140.
  • Available for employment for the duration of fall semester 2026
  • A level of proficiency in ArcGIS Pro appropriate for a junior or senior undergraduate GIS student.
  • A valid driver's license; able to complete the State of Utah Defensive Driver Training Program.
Preferences
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, Outlook, and Word.
  • A basic skill level with Adobe Creative Cloud, particularly Acrobat, Illustrator, Photoshop, and Bridge.
  • Proficiency in Python programming for geoprocessing purposes
  • Previous work with drones, either in an academic, professional, or personal capacity.
