The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine at the Medical College of Wisconsin is seeking a full-time faculty Clinical Health Psychologist with expertise in psychological adjustment to malignant hematology, blood and marrow transplantation, and cellular therapies. The faculty position is housed in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine and is integrated into the Medical College of Wisconsin Blood and Marrow Program, which is housed in the Department of Medicine, Division of Hematology and Oncology. The position is expected to entail 50% outpatient and 50% inpatient care. This faculty member will be an integral member of the Health Psychology Residency (APA-Accredited psychology internship) and the Clinical Health Psychology Fellowship.
Position Summary
This is an academic position that requires a combination of teaching, patient care, and research, as well as administrative activities necessary for the department's function. The appointment is considered full-time, or 1.0 FTE (full-time effort), with a total of 0.9 FTE dedicated to clinical practice and 0.1 FTE protected for academic work. The psychologist will supervise the pre-BMT assessment and psychological testing portion of the Health Psychology Residency (internship) cancer psychology rotation. Additionally, there are opportunities for the psychologist to supervise the Clinical Health Psychology Fellowship cancer care rotation. Other teaching responsibilities include presenting didactics to interdisciplinary learners and health psychology trainees (internship and fellowship level). The successful candidate will be an integral clinical supervisor and core member of the Health Psychology Residency faculty and Clinical Health Psychology Fellowship faculty.
Blood and Marrow Transplant (BMT) Specialty Practice
The BMT psychologist will work as part of an extensive, multidisciplinary adult BMT program. The position is a combined outpatient and inpatient role. The BMT psychologist will perform a pre-BMT psychological assessment (psychological interview and psychological testing), assessment and therapy focused on adjustment to illness, and assessment and therapy focused on adjustment after transplant. The BMT psychologist faculty member will work in an outpatient oncology clinic with transplant physicians, oncologists, nurses, APPs, social workers, psychiatrists, and another part-time BMT psychologist. Although all patients undergoing allogeneic stem cell transplant will be seen for a pre-BMT evaluation, the BMT psychologist can also expect to work with patients undergoing autologous stem cell transplant and other cellular therapies such as CAR-T. In the inpatient setting, the psychologist will deliver psychological evaluation, intervention, and consultation to support adjustment, mood, and coping among patients admitted under the BMT service line. The psychologist will work alongside BMT physicians, advanced practice providers, and nurse case managers in a shared hospital unit. The psychologist will also coordinate patient care alongside physical and occupational therapists, speech language specialists, and dieticians.
Duties and Responsibilities

• Assessing and providing treatments for subclinical symptoms of dysphoria and anxiety, adjustment difficulties, and quality of life concerns that can surface in the presence of hematologic malignancies and cellular therapies.
• Assessing coping, adjustment, and psychiatric functioning in patients pre-BMT and in the post-BMT survivorship period.
• Participate in weekly BMT Conference (every Tuesday) involving discussion of patient candidacy for transplant and treatment updates for patients actively admitted on the BMT inpatient service.
• Participate in weekly interdisciplinary BMT inpatient rounds to address clinical concerns and facilitate care coordination, with the goal of optimizing patient outcomes and recovery.
• Participate in weekly BMT Quality Improvement meetings (every Thursday) involving teaching and discussion of content relevant to ensuring a successful, quality BMT program (e.g., accreditation updates, treatment protocol teaching).
• Assessing caregiver strain and helping family members access coping resources.
• Providing clinical supervision of psychology residents (interns) and post-doctoral fellows.
• Consulting with the multidisciplinary BMT team regarding risks and strengths for BMT candidacy, as well as consulting on early intervention strategies.
• Performing capacity assessments when there are questions about a patient's ability to make complex medical decisions, perform other specific functions, or live independently. For example, in the setting of neurotoxicity associated with cellular therapies.
• Performing pre-BMT psychosocial assessment and testing for strengths and risks of BMT, and applying symptom report measures, cognitive screeners, and personality testing (as indicated) to medically complicated transplant candidates.
• Providing support to the families of patients with life-limiting conditions being served by F&MCW, and facilitating communications among patients, family members, and the primary team.
• Providing behavioral medicine interventions to manage pain, disability, address sleep problems, and enhance medical adherence.
• Providing behavioral medicine empirically supported treatments (e.g., CBT, ACT, BA) for patients coping with cancer-related symptoms, psychiatric symptoms, and psychological adjustment.
• Teaching didactics for Health Psychology, Psychiatry, and medical students.
• Initiating, conducting, and participating in scholarship and research. If desired, the psychologist is invited to join peer cancer psychologists in the Psycho-Oncology Research Lab.
• Performing other duties as identified by the Service Chief, Division Leader, and Chair.

Qualifications
Required Qualifications

• Eligible for psychology licensure in the State of Wisconsin
• Doctorate in Clinical or Counseling Psychology from an APA-Accredited program
• Completed an APA-Accredited internship
• Completed a Clinical Health Psychology Fellowship

Preferred Qualifications

• Fellowship experience in psychosocial oncology and BMT preferred
• Inpatient and outpatient health psychology experience
• Experience in psychological testing with medical population
• Experience working on a multidisciplinary team
