Role:
As a Basketball Instructor, you are responsible for delivering engaging, inclusive, and developmentally appropriate basketball programming that supports physical literacy, skill development, and positive sport experiences. You will connect with participants, families, and teammates in ways that bring the Gen H Lifestyle to life, fostering confidence, enjoyment, and lifelong participation in sport and movement.
You will contribute to the delivery, evaluation, and evolution of basketball programs while creating a welcoming, safe, and motivating environment for participants of varying ages and skill levels.
Reports to: Sport Coordinator
Responsibilities:
- Oversee aspects of the basketball offerings including curriculum based and play based experiences, school activity days and participation in the delivery of special events
- Explore, experiment and recommend new ways of building play based/ spontaneous experiences for basketball through a service design lens and help build capacity to execute
- Track, monitor and report trends, participation, conversations with participants and audiences
- In collaboration with team members, continuously test and tinker, evaluate, recommend and design experiences for basketball and work on generating intentional value for our pass holders
- Assist with developing business cases for the design and implementation of play based and curriculum-based learning experiences for basketball
- Build strong relationships with our guest audiences to determine their needs, what they value and translate learnings to the team to test and implement the overall Gen H Lifestyle experience
- Participate in imagining the basketball experience development process through a service design thinking lens and then implement and build capacity in the team to do the same
- Assist in seeking out and exploring trends and practices in technical skills and curriculum development
- Design and instruct the technical skills in Basketball development for children ages 5-15 years through innovative lesson development and execution
- Integrate and implement learnings and evolutions into the basketball team's work in "real time" as a result of experimentation and testing
- Be accountable for the development, progress and evaluation of work-plans and performance targets for the basketball program
- Empower and hold team members accountable for achieving established work-plans and targets through the regular follow-up, feedback and mentoring
- Assess, and provide feedback on operational policies, procedures and training manuals to ensure they are aligned and support the new business model and team practices
- Consult on the development of the basketball budget and understand and monitor key components that influence targets
Qualifications:
- Enrolled in or graduate of a post-secondary diploma and/or university degree in education, kinesiology, recreation, management, business, etc.
- 2-3 years progressive experience in basketball curriculum and environments
- Current Standard First Aid and CPR-C/AED certifications
- Required basketball certifications as designated by Vivo
- Experience playing, coaching, or instructing basketball (youth or recreational level preferred)
- Experience working with children, youth, or diverse participant groups in a sport or recreation setting
- Strong communication, leadership, and group management skills
- Ability to create fun, inclusive, and developmentally appropriate experiences
- NCCP certification or basketball-specific training considered an asset
- Ability to work evenings and weekends as required
