What is a part time physician assistant?

Part-time physician assistants are licensed healthcare professionals who work fewer hours per week than full-time PAs, often providing medical care in clinics, hospitals, or private practices. They perform many of the same duties as full-time PAs, such as conducting exams, diagnosing illnesses, and prescribing medications, but on a reduced schedule. This flexible role is ideal for those seeking work-life balance or who have other commitments. Part-time PAs must still meet certification and licensure requirements and may have varied benefits compared to full-time employees.

What does a part time physician assistant do?

The job duties of a part-time physician assistant (part-time PA) focus on providing primary care to patients and offering support to licensed physicians. As a part-time physician assistant, you work less than 40 hours per week on average. During your shift, you handle responsibilities like examining and diagnosing patients, making assessments, providing treatment, and ordering tests. Typically, a physician assistant works under the supervision of a doctor. You can perform specialized tasks, such as assisting with surgery or procedures. While there are limits to what you are allowed to do, PAs have some independence in their job.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a part time physician assistant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Part Time Physician Assistant, you need a master's degree from an accredited PA program, national certification (PANCE), and a state license. Familiarity with electronic medical records (EMR) systems, diagnostic tools, and relevant clinical protocols is essential. Excellent communication, time management, and adaptability help you collaborate effectively and provide quality care within limited hours. These skills ensure efficient patient management, compliance with healthcare standards, and support high-quality outcomes even in a part-time capacity.

How do part time physician assistants typically manage their workload and maintain continuity of care with patients?

Part-time physician assistants often work closely with supervising physicians and full-time colleagues to ensure seamless patient care. Effective communication, detailed charting, and regular team meetings help maintain continuity, even when schedules vary. Many healthcare facilities have established protocols to keep part-time staff updated on patient progress and treatment plans. This collaborative approach supports patient outcomes while allowing PAs the flexibility of a part-time schedule.

Job description

About the Role

We're looking for an experienced, autonomous Physician Assistant to join our clinical team, providing primary and episodic care to residents in skilled nursing facilities. This is an independent role built around continuity — you'll manage your own panel and build long-term relationships with patients and their families.

What's In It For You

  • You build your own schedule. You decide the days and hours that work for you. Keep it consistent once it's set, and the rest is yours.
  • Part Time roles requires 3 days per week of availability.
  • 6-hour shifts. Rounds generally start in the morning (7–10 a.m.). No on-call, no overnights, ever.
  • Chart from home. Wrap up your documentation wherever you want — you're not tied to the facility once your rounds are done.
  • Real earning potential. Productivity-based compensation — the more you see, the more you make. High-volume providers seeing 24 patients in a shift can earn up to $624/day.
  • Long-term retention incentive up to $50,000 on top of your pay.
  • Full benefits: W-2 with medical, dental, and vision; 401(k) with match; PTO; short- and long-term disability; employer-paid life insurance.
  • $1,500 annual CME stipend, plus a company iPad and lab coat.
  • Modern tech that gets out of your way. Integrated EHR, voice dictation, and UpToDate® for fast, clean charting.

Your Day-to-Day

You'll see roughly 16–20 patients a day — a mix of long-term chronic care and acute issues. That means annual wellness visits and H&Ps, managing chronic and co-morbid conditions, responding to acute changes, reviewing meds and orders, and coordinating with collaborating physicians, specialists, and facility staff to keep care seamless. You'll also stay in touch with families and join care conferences where it makes sense.

Qualifications

  • Board certification required — active and unrestricted.
  • Valid, unrestricted Physician Assistant license in the state of operation.
  • Master's degree in Physician Assistant with an accredited program.
  • Skilled nursing or long-term care experience strongly preferred.
  • Strong independent clinical judgment and the ability to move quickly in a fast-paced setting.
