What is a part time pediatric RN?

A Part Time Pediatric RN is a registered nurse who specializes in caring for infants, children, and adolescents, but works fewer hours than a full-time nurse, typically under 30-36 hours per week. These nurses assess and monitor young patients, administer medications, assist with treatments, and educate families about health care needs. Part time positions can offer flexible schedules, making them ideal for those balancing other commitments while still providing critical pediatric care. They may work in hospitals, clinics, doctor's offices, or home health settings.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a part time pediatric RN, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Part Time Pediatric RN, you need a valid RN license, strong pediatric assessment skills, and experience in child-focused care, often supported by certifications like PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support). Familiarity with pediatric EHR systems, medication administration, and age-appropriate medical equipment is typically required. Compassion, patience, and excellent communication with both children and their families are crucial soft skills. These competencies ensure safe, effective care and foster trust with young patients and their caregivers, even in part-time roles where consistency is vital.

What are some common challenges faced by part-time pediatric RNs, and how can they be managed?

Part-time pediatric RNs often face challenges such as staying updated with patient care plans and maintaining strong communication with the healthcare team due to their limited hours. To manage this, it's important to utilize thorough handoff reports, actively participate in team meetings when possible, and make use of digital charting systems to stay informed about patient progress. Building strong relationships with fellow nurses and physicians also helps ensure continuity of care and smooth transitions during shift changes.

  • Complex Care Management: Provide daily maintenance and care for a G-tube, Ileostomy, and Foley catheter.

  • Collaborative Care: Work in tandem with the 12-hour aide to ensure the client's comfort, hygiene, and safety.

  • Therapy Support: Assist in the implementation of programs designed by visiting PT, OT, and Recreational therapists.

  • Documentation: Maintain precise clinical records of intake/output, skin integrity, and medication administration.

  • Comfort with Animals: Must be comfortable working in a home with two friendly cats.

  • Equipment Knowledge: Familiarity with custom shower chairs and wheelchair-accessible vans is a plus.

  • Physical Ability: Able to assist with positioning and transfers as needed.

Why Apply?
  • High-Level Clinical Engagement: Use your full range of nursing skills in a stable, one-on-one environment.

  • Team-Based Support: You are never alone—you will have an aide on-site for 12 hours of your shift and a full team of therapists coming to the home.
