Lewis Central Community School District is looking for part-time school-year Bus Monitors for the 2026-27 school year. These positions will start in mid-August 2026.

Job Title: Bus Monitor

Department: Operations - Transportation

Supervisor: Transportation Director

Classification: Classified - Part-Time School-Year

Summary

Assists the school bus driver in ensuring the safe, orderly, and efficient transportation of students. Provides supervision and support to students while riding the bus and during loading and unloading, with an emphasis on student safety, behavior management, and compliance with district procedures.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Reports to work on a regular and reliable basis.
  • Assists the bus driver in maintaining a safe and orderly environment for students during transportation.
  • Supervises student behavior on the bus and supports implementation of district discipline procedures.
  • Collaborates with the bus driver to ensure student safety at all times; supports the driver so they can focus on safe vehicle operation.
  • Assists students with loading and unloading the bus, including monitoring safe crossing procedures.
  • Provides additional support to students with special needs, including assisting with seating, securement, and monitoring, as trained.
  • Observes and reports student behavior concerns, safety issues, and incidents to the driver or transportation director and other appropriate school staff.
  • Assists in emergency situations, including bus evacuations, following district and state safety procedures.
  • Helps ensure students are seated properly and remain seated while the bus is in motion.
  • May assist with securing wheelchairs, safety vests, or other specialized equipment as required.
  • Maintains confidentiality of student information in accordance with district policies and applicable laws.
  • Participates in required training, including safety procedures and student management techniques.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Education and/or Experience

A combination of relevant education and experience may be considered.

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Experience working with children preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage student behavior in a calm and professional manner.
  • Must meet all district and state background check requirements.

Hours/Schedule: The position is guaranteed 5 hours of pay per day. 2.5 in the morning and 2.5 in the afternoon. The actual time worked may vary for either the morning or afternoon. This position is expected to work all days students are in session and need transportation to and from school. That is usually 177 student days. Typically, student days are the only days you will need to be in attendance but there are transportation meetings, trainings, etc. that may require you to come in outside of your normally scheduled hours. These would be paid unless told otherwise.

Rate of pay: The hourly rate of pay starts at $13.15 per hour. An increased starting rate is available for up to 5 years credit for prior bus monitor experience. Your starting rate will be determined after meeting with HR and/or the Transportation Director and discussing your qualifications.

Benefits: Since this is a part-time, part-year position, it is not eligible for health and dental benefits however, it does qualify for a $20,000 life insurance policy at no cost to you. All employees are enrolled from day one, in the state sponsored retirement program, IPERS. The District contributes 9.44% of your wages to this. IPERS requires that you would contribute 6.29% of your wages.

Paid Leave: The District has both paid sick leave and paid personal leave. As an employee of the District 2 personal days are given to use throughout the school year. Paid sick leave is also awareded based on the number of years employed with the District; the first year is 10 days, pro-rated for the month that you start employment. This position is not eligible for paid vacation leave.

Paid Holidays: This position is paid for 5 holidays throughout the school year. Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, New Year's Day and Memorial Day.
